Meet Patrick King | Handyman/contractor/best dad ever :)

We had the good fortune of connecting with Patrick King and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Patrick, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Well, 😂! I basically had to. Among all things, being a successful Green Belt Six Sigma machinist/programmer/SOP guy/shop manager/contract profitability finder in the manufacturing field in San Diego and having no end to shops that wanted to bring me onboard as a full time asset to their shop… I was taken by a custody change with my kids. I have 5 by two mothers. And besides the six figure income I was making, I’m a father above all else. Companies couldn’t employ me due to the new custody agreement and my decided path of being a father to my kids rather than making money and living that life.. so I had to start another business to stay in their lives and continue to be a father to them. More recently it’s working out much better than it has but it has been a very hard struggle to simply stay afloat.
So yes.. it was out of necessity… Yet I am very satisfied and for the first time in a long time I really love what I do! I get to fix things, connect with people and make them happy! 🙂

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
What sets me apart from others:
My background in ITAR, IS9104 and other governing authority that has shaped the way I conduct business, even to the smallest degree. I do pride myself on offering guarantees on all my work, carrying contractor grade insurance and doing the job right, whether I lose money of the job or not. When my head hits my pillow, I’m proud of my day because I know I took no shortcuts or failed to accomplish a job to code.
What am I proud of or excited about:
Everyday I get to be in a client’s life and fill a need that makes their lives better or easier. I also get to chat and interact with them. I’m a people person with strong skills to get things done but moreso to love people in any way I can. I often find myself being told things possibly others in my field are not. It seems there is a trust established from the beginning with my clients and I get to know them, their families, their struggles… And I get to be real with them. So have become trusted friends that I’ll have a beer with and talk about life, 😂!
How did I get where I’m at today? Was it easy? How did I overcome challenges?:
Blood, sweat, tears, faith in God (however loosely I held on in COUNTLESS moments) and the every lasting love I have for my kids. No… Not in the slightest was it easy… I’ve had to fight for every dollar I’ve made and that knowing once I made it, it was spent on life. But these traits, connection and beliefs above kept me waking up everyday, stalling for a bit, talking my way out of bed and away from the bottom of a bottle and to work. Then again, the next day and the day after… It’s a neverending cycle, but brings me joy and gets easier day by day. 🙂
Lessons I’ve learned:
Id say many… From knowing bread tricks in sweating copper to consistent drywall repair. The most important lesson is nothing is impossible. There is always an answer. I used to make parts that put rockets into space… Fixing/building/making things work that didn’t before is much less intellectually taxing. Just takes a mind that knows when to stop and step back… The solution to every problem always presents itself in time… Or I grab a hammer and make it happen quicker, 🤣! Just kidding. 🙂
What do I want this world to know about me?:
Well, I’m not a brand. Our little business is a service and we treat it with the same respect we’d treat our own household. We build relationships and care about the people we do work for. We show up in ways that matter to our clients at whatever cost to us. We are Handymen, but moreso, we are people people. We value the client more than the money we earn when a job is done. 🙂

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’d say for eats, it would be shared between a Thai place in Coronado called Swadee… Best Thai in SD! Also any Sushi Deli… Best bang for the buck and super high quality sashimi.
For outings, of course SeaWorld.. they’ve added a bunch of coasters that definitely make the park more exciting for the theme. 🙂 We’d see what’s playing at the La Jolla Playhouse. Downtown SD is also a plethora of historical sights and old San Diego restorations. Balboa Park would be an entire day of prado walks and checking out vendors, also the Torture Museum, Natural History museum, Aerospace and Train museums… Plenty of fun stuff there.
As for hidden gems, I’d say a trip to my town up here in Ramona. 🙂 It’s the country in the city… 40 minutes from the beach, 20 minutes from the mountains. People just slow down up here. One could start a meaningful convo with anyone at any time. People care about their neighbors up here a lot… Plus not many street lights so the sky is incredible at night! Two major hiking trails leading to Potato Chip Rock and Iron Mountain. Julian is up the mountain from here and is an historical mining town with tours and a train station that hosts rides around the old mining camps surrounding the little town.
Then there’s the oversized Adirondack chair hunt… There are several built around SD. Makes for some fun photo ops. 🙂

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would dedicate all my successes and everything good that has come from this move to my *beautiful*, capricious and emotionally intelligent children. I have 4 boys and 1 girl in the middle of them all… And their love for each other and dedication to each other is more than enough motivation to grind hard and work so they can all enjoy the connection they have with each other, their mothers and myself. There’s not enough space here to describe how amazing my children are… I am so blessed!!
