Meet Patricia Lutz | Costume Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Patricia Lutz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Patricia, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started my business by accident. I had sewn for myself for a while and done some costume design for theater and people started coming to me for custom pieces and alterations. Lust Designs and Performance was born from there.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My designs draw heavily on historical dress and I incorporate elements of fashion from various periods with modern silhouettes and fabrics. I developed my work over the years making costumes and fashion for myself and for theatre. There’s always a learning curve when you develop your own aesthetic and convince others of its value. I thankfully have shown the quality of my work over the years and people trust me with their visions.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love the art museums at Balboa Park, it’s in walking distance of my home ans studio ans I go often for inspiration. On the way I always stop for a sandwich at The Marketplace on 5th and Maple. It’s got the best deli in the city and the staff is incredibly friendly. I also love to have dinner at Baja Betty’s in Hillcrest and nothing beats a morning London Fog at Le Stat’s.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I wouldn’t be able to sew if it weren’t for two incredible women in my life. The first is my mother who helped me make some of my original designs and ideas come to life and showed me how to use a machine. Second is to the amazing Gypsy Star of Charlotte, North Carolina, who showed me how to drape and make flat patterns. I wouldn’t be the designer I am now without them.
