We had the good fortune of connecting with Oseas Villatoro and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Oseas, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Oseas Villatoro is a woman’s & men’s ready to wear designer. He combines different fabrics with unique patterns and draping techniques to create young, chic, and edgy ready to wear designs. Inspired by his artful interpretation of emotional and romantic music, he integrates different styles of music into his designs. Some even say he always tells a story with his runway shows, couture, ready to wear and swim wear.

Oseas was born in Los Angeles, with his background coming from Guatemalan roots, Villatoro pulls from his background in his designs. Besides being a full time designer, Villatoro is a full time father and alumni of Fashion Careers College. He constantly envisions people everywhere expressing their feelings through their fashion choices. That is what he wants to provide; expression to his clients through his designs.

Oseas showcased his first collection at Fashion Week San Diego (FWSD) in 2013 and Los Angeles Fashion Week (LAFW) in 2014 to much fanfare. Riding on that success he showcased a collection at New York Fashion Week (NYFW) in 2015. This was one of the biggest dreams he had accomplished to date. Villatoro was getting noticed by the fashion world so he applied and qualified for the semi-finales for Project Runway season 14. He also designed a one of a kind look for Her Universe fashion show at Comic Con San Diego in 2014 and 2015. Working with successful people in the industry, he envisions his clothes on everyone no matter the size, i.e., Villatoro has designed a plus size collection for women of all curves. His additional accomplishments include opening his online store in June 2016 and beating out over 200 applicants in the 2018 WWDMAGIC Competition for immersion designers in Las Vegas, which was a big step for him and his brand.

After a few years of working with boutiques around the United States, in 2021 Villatoro opened his own store in the heart of his home town in San Diego California (Hillcrest). Villatoro will continue to bring his creative visions to the runway and the masses. If you ask him, he will tell you that this is only the beginning.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets me apart from other designers in San Diego is I do the process from beginning to end including source the materials, sketch the design, make the pattern and cut and sew the garments.

I’ve learned along the way how to run a business, work with clients and colleagues in the industry. I try to learn something new every day and take critiques professionally.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take guests to Little Italy, La Jolla Cove, Mission Bay and Downtown including all of the art, nature and clothing boutiques in those areas.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My partner Dorian Brewer pushed me to start my own brick and mortar boutique in Hillcrest. He said it’s better to try and fail then to have regrets in the future of never trying. I want to personally thank him for his inspiration and guidance as he is a business owner himself running a State Farm agency in North Park.
