Meet Noly Tengonciang | President of the Happy Hour Golf Club

We had the good fortune of connecting with Noly Tengonciang and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Noly, we’d love to hear what makes you happy.
Well, aside from being with my wife and kids for obvious reasons…being able to provide something to others that brings them fun, excitement, and joy. I feel like people often forget to have fun. It’s often looked at as a frivolous thing. But having fun and enjoying life is super important. Most of us are constantly inundated with the responsibilities of our jobs, taking care of family, paying bills, etc. that we forget to make time to enjoy our lives. But we need fun. Having fun re-energizes us, it relieves stress, puts us in a better state of mind. And it just feels good. It puts people in a better emotional and mental position to take on the difficult parts of their lives. I love being able to provide a way for others to experience that.
Playing golf also makes me happy. Being able to be outside and enjoy the outdoors is great. I also love the battle within myself to improve. Golf really is the game that most closely resembles life. I’ve learned so much about myself playing this game.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Happy Hour Golf Club is an SCGA golf club based in San Diego. One of our members summed up this group perfectly, “The group doesn’t care if you’re a good golfer or a bad golfer, just that you’re a good person.” Our goal is to provide a welcoming, fun, stress-free environment for golfers of all levels to enjoy the game of golf. We have monthly events that range from fun gatherings to competitive tournaments. We also have golfers of varying skill levels, so all levels are welcome. One of the things I’m most proud of with this club is that I can put any group of 4 together at one of our events and they’ll have a blast together. Not just be cordial and polite, but have a genuine good time together.
I won’t say running this club is easy, because it’s not, but the members of our club definitely make it worth it. Because of how awesome the members of our club are, I want to work hard to make sure that each of our events are “can’t miss” events. Also, the local golf community and the online community have definitely made things a bit easier for us. Brands like Linksoul & Spade Soda have been incredibly supportive of us and our events.
The most important thing I’ve learned building this club is don’t be afraid to ask. Many of the best things this club has received is due to me just asking for it. Reaching out to brands, courses, and other venues has been intimidating because we’re still relatively new. But the response from them has been amazing. We now have relationships with companies and courses we never could have imagined just a few months ago.
As for what I want the world to know about Happy Hour Golf Club? Just that if you ever feel intimidated or uncomfortable when you play golf with random people you get paired up with, maybe come check out one of our events. Come hang with us and see if we fit your vibe.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well, being that my best friends are all into golf we’d definitely be hitting some of the amazing courses we have here in San Diego. To start with a chill vibe we’d begin the week at Goat Hill golf course. Then we’d play at Coronado, Steele Canyon, Arrowood, and of course, Torrey Pines.
We would go out to eat in the Convoy area probably at least a couple times. With all the incredible Asian food in the area from KBBQ to desserts we’d be stuffed. Taegukgi, Somi Somi, and EE Nami are some of our favorites.
At least one night would have to be spent in the Gaslamp and Little Italy for some dinner and bar hopping. After stopping by places like Kettner Exchange, Born & Raised, Trailer Park After Dark, and Werewolf we’d end the night at Tacos El Gordo.
And on the final day before they leave, we would head to our favorite taqueria (Cali’s & Fries), grab some California burritos and carne asada fries, then go hang out at the beach for the day.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I definitely want to shoutout the members of HHGC. They are such a great group of people and we have such a good time together. Everyone is so friendly and supportive. Without them none of what we do would be possible.
