Meet Nick Price | Pop Americana Artist and Owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Nick Price and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nick, what are you inspired by?
I’m comfortably aware that this might shock, scare, or puzzle others – but I’m inspired by death. And not in a gruesome or horrific way. Rather I know that I will die someday. Death has given me a reason to be motivated and propel myself positively forward. Although it does give me a fair amount of anxiety to know this, but what thinking about my death has inspired me to do is to ‘act’. Act on my passions and to seize every moment that I can. And simply act on the necessary steps that I confidently believe create a better version of myself for not just me, but others that I love.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My company Pop Americana was created out of simply my interest to stay consistently creative. And add it to my daily practice to set aside time to walk off unleashed into the more fun parts of my brain and soul. I believe I’m creating art that crosses over into multiple different interests and can appeal to a wide audience. Alongside I’m proof that you can reengage your talents and be creative in your 40’s. And I’m proud of that. I’ve never said “I’m done learning” or “I’m content with one style of creativity/art”. I’ve taken my competitive nature and used it to learn new mediums and push for new results.
Being creative has always been who I am. It’s always been that part of me that I turn to ever since I can remember. Whether it was creating back stories for my action figures or simply illustrating my own characters. And growing up wasn’t easy. I, like so many, had hurdles and naysayers that decided it was appropriate to tell a little kid that I shouldn’t bother with my creative endeavors. It’s not a real profession. And like so many others – those words (Positive and Negative) stuck with me for decades. Finally in my late 30’s I decided frankly, that I just didn’t really care anymore about any of it. And started fresh and reconnected with myself and what my priorities are. My priorities are fairly simple. Be a good dad and husband and friend. Keep my creativity flowing while I still alive. And when my anxiety is low enough…take a risk (ha). Like attempting to write a compelling story about my life.
The Pop Americana brand is fueled by past, present and future thoughts. It’s created for anyone and everyone to enjoy. It doesn’t speak to any political or worldly agenda’s. I create to entertain, collaborate, and connect with others all over the world.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I always take my friends and family to Sunset Cliffs to give them an opportunity to watch the perfect California sunset. And we’d definitely get the Wahoo tacos from South Beach Bar & Grill for lunch there in Ocean Beach. Later in the week we’d absolutely order Chris Ono Grinds Hawaiian BBQ. HOLY SMOKES is it good. And the staff is so incredibly nice and welcoming. It’s fits regularly into my households diet.
Outside of Sunset Cliffs, taking the opportunity to paddle board or kayak in Mission Bay is incredibly relaxing and a great place to spot a few sea lions bobbing their heads in the water. Another must would be to check out the Barrio Logan neighborhood. It has such a cultural intensity as you walk around it’s hard not to soak up the fun, food, drink, and atmosphere while there.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people to thank. And my family and wife are always supportive and invested in helping me continue my passions. Though after moving to San Diego from Chicago in 2017, I was introduced to Devon Devereaux. Devon is a successful artist in his own right. And he started an ‘Art Night’ with friends that he hosts at his house. With only just meeting me he invited me to come over one night and meet the gang. Everyone at Art Night is not only talented, but they excel in so many different mediums of creative expression. It was like I hit the jackpot on meeting so many creative people at the same time. And this Art Night alongside Devon and multiple other attendees has inspired me on so many levels to continue staying creative and curious. It’s been without a doubt a main factor in the creation of my company Pop Americana. And I couldn’t share my story accurately without recognizing Devon and his infectious love for art and his creative talents.
