Meet Nicholas VandenNiewenhof | Executive Director of the Lincoln Institute of California

We had the good fortune of connecting with Nicholas VandenNieuwenhof and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nicholas, let’s talk legacy – what do you want yours to be?
I envision my legacy to be embodied in the Lincoln Institute of California. This nonprofit has been born out of my deep commitment to making a significant difference for the state I love. The Institute’s primary goal is to leave a lasting impact on the Golden State, fostering positive change for years to come.
One of my core aspirations is to reignite the “California Dream,” providing a platform where students can unleash their potential and pursue their aspirations with unwavering support. The success stories of these budding entrepreneurs, influential figures, and change-makers will be the true measure of our nonprofit’s impact.
My personal passion lies in fighting for the next generation of Californians, as well as advocating for the ideals and values of young conservatives. It is my sincere hope that my efforts through the Lincoln Institute will be remembered as a testament to my unwavering dedication to the advancement and prosperity of future Californian generations. Ultimately, if I can get people to know about the power of the Lincoln Institute of California, I will feel content in my legacy.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am most proud of the Lincoln Institute of California, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that holds a deep commitment to fostering the growth and development of promising college students, empowering them to become the future leaders of California. During my college years, I was elected as the Vice President of Policy for the Associated Student Government. It was a role of significant responsibility, as I was entrusted with managing and deliberating a substantial budget funded by student fees, exceeding one million dollars annually. Despite this massive responsibility, I realized there was a noticeable lack of accessible leadership resources and mentorship available to guide me through this process.
Flash forward a few years later, and I ended up moving to Southern California. Throughout my time here, I had the opportunity to speak with California college students who experienced the same issues. I was so surprised because California is the Golden State, a place that should serve as a beacon of opportunity for the brightest minds. It seemed as though the next generations had nothing to help guide them in their academic and professional careers. And thus, the Lincoln Institute of California was born.
I strongly believe that aspiring student leaders like myself and others should have access to a structured support system to help them excel during their terms in office at colleges and universities across the board. I became deeply passionate about the idea of establishing a leadership organization that would fill this void and serve as a guiding light for young leaders, nurturing them to become the best versions of themselves while in office and beyond.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Orange County is undeniably one of the most remarkable destinations in California, and it’s not hard to see why it holds a special place in the hearts of many across the entire country. From the beaches to Disneyland, the area offers so much to do.
For me, a picture-perfect day in Orange County would be incomplete without a morning spent surfing down in Laguna Beach. After a session or simply spending time at the beach, there’s nothing quite like a visit to the iconic Shake Shack in Crystal Cove. You can’t go wrong with a burger and a chocolate shake.
For dinner, head back up the coast to Newport Beach to dine at Starfish. Their Pad Thai, is delicious, as is their veggie roll.
And of course, if you have time during the day, come stop by the Lincoln Institute offices. We have a spacious outside patio and a pool table to have some fun during our work days.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am proud to express my gratitude and extend a special shoutout to Rick Albrecht. Without his visionary leadership, the Lincoln Institute would not have become the organization that it is today. It started in 2015 when Rick first developed the idea for the Institute, and since then, he has been the driving force behind its growth and success. When I met Rick in 2018, we had an alignment of visions and aspirations for the future of California. Through collaboration and hard work, we transformed the Institute from a mere committee focused on the future of California’s education future to a thriving nonprofit organization.
As the Chairman of our esteemed Board of Directors, his leadership has been pivotal in shaping our growth and programs. I am grateful for Rick’s unwavering support, which has been so significant in making the Institute’s mission a reality. Our success is a testament to his dedication and belief in our cause. Without his invaluable contributions, we would not have been able to empower the next generation of California leaders to the extent that we have.
