We had the good fortune of connecting with Nathan Wilson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nathan, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Music has always been an amazing outlet and community, and I’ve always felt like music chose me as much as I chose it. It’s an experience putting all of your feelings and thoughts into something tangible and then see people connect over it. I can’t think about having a career in anything else when people cheer you onto the stage, or when people come up to you after your performance and tell you how much your art means to them. There’s nothing like it at all.
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
A large part of what sets me apart with my music is my sound and my vulnerability in my lyrics. People like my music because it speaks to the more challenging feelings we all go through and remind us that its ok to go through them. My most recent release “Submerge” is largely about coming to terms with personal and professional struggles and the music provides a sense of comfort in coming to terms with them, both sonically and lyrically. It hasn’t been easy building my career in music, but I see things coming to fruition, having new achievmnents over the last year. I’ve played a record store show, DIY shows, small venues, and even my first tour across the Midwest and East Coast. I also performed for a live recording session directly to vinyl.
I’ve learned along the way to never give up and always remind yourself there’s more to achieve. Staying focused is what keeps you going and you will be provided more oppurtunity the harder you work.
I want people to see that art in the right conditions can grow into something beautiful, and is not just a product that’s sold. Art is a means of expression that changes as the creator does and it connects with all kinds of people.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I currently live in San Diego, so the first thing on my agenda would be to go to a beach. I tend to frequent Mission Beach as it’s pretty close to where I live, but any beach out here is amazing. If the person visiting wanted to go somewhere more scenic with less people, Id suggest going up to Torrey Pines or taking a walk around Balboa Park. There’s beautiful gardens and trails all around it and going inside there are fantastic museums of all kinds. Afterwards I would highly reccomend grabbing a burrito from any of the taquerias around the city, but my favorite is definitely Nico’s in Ocean Beach. There’s nothing like eating a burrito by the ocean as the sun sets. After that, there’s a lot of night life here, so I’d suggest going to check out live music in either the Ocean Beach or Pacific Beach areas. Pacific Beach has tons of open mics on weekdays so its a great area to catch local musicians and meet new people. If you have more time, I strongly recommend checking out the San Diego Zoo or grabbing tickets to a Padres Game. Petco Park is one if the coolest baseball stadiums Ive ever been to.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I definitely have to shout out my family and my bandmate Ashleigh. Through all of their motivation and support I would definitely not be where I am today. My parents were always very supportive of my musical pursuits and they knew from a very young age that I had something special; a natural aptitude for music. They bought me my first instruments, provided me private lessons and are always excited to hear what I release next. Ashleigh has been there every step of the way with my project Microplanet, from providing album artwork to marketing and production of all of my releases. She’s always been in my corner helping me stay focused on my goals and pushing me to achieve them.
