We had the good fortune of connecting with Natalie Lahr and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Natalie, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Being a content creator and a business owner has allowed me to be artistic. I love when work is fast and always changing. Sometimes I’m in a photoshoot, at a fun event, designing a website, or setting goals in my office. I enjoy bringing my vision to life and sharing what I created to social media.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My career started by exposing my most vulnerable self. I suffer from androgenic alopecia, a fancy term for genetic hair loss. When I went off to college, I lost most of my hair and couldn’t find a way to hide it. I discovered alternative hair-like wigs and toppers on social media through a hashtag. I soon documented my journey about hair loss and wigs. Whether it was a wig tutorial, sharing more about my hair loss and autoimmune disease, or inspirational content, my goal was to help other women and help normalize hair loss. Soon my page took off within a couple of months, and I found myself working with a few wig companies. I even joined the marketing team for my favorite wig brand at the time. Soon as I got experience doing social media, I started doing social media for dog companies, skincare, holistic health, and more!

Putting myself out there, especially something very sensitive and exposing my true appearance, was terrifying. Of course, there is always the change of people being negative or criticizing your work or look. Starting my own content creator/marketing business also had challenges like knowing your value and worth. Learning how to navigate more of the business side versus the creative side has been an enormous learning curve. I still learn a lot everyday.

I’m still a student attending college. However I was able to create this job and passion for myself by doing what I love. Sometimes putting yourself out there can be scary. However, it has changed my life!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If you are a coffee lover like me I’d take my best friend to Dark Horse in North Park. Best coffee shop ever! Then I’d love to share some of the cute small shops like north park nursery or Home + Hound for a cute mini shopping spree. North Park has endless amazing restaurants.

Coronado is a must! Definitely rent bikes in Coronado. It’s so beautiful with the view of down town and even the beach. We’d probably grab food from Henry’s and Moo Time ice cream after. During the holidays the Hotel Del in Coronado has an ice rink outside right on the beach. We would go ice skating when the sunset starts and enjoy all the Christmas Lights and decorations.

Later on in the week I’d visit Little Italy, or even take them to La Jolla cove to the cave shop. San Diego has so much to do and every beach is so beautiful and different.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Someone that has played a significant role in my whole career is my friend and excellent hairdresser, Alex. We initially met through work in the wig industry, but once I started my journey as a content creator and now business owner she’s been there just one phone call away. She not only gave me good business advice but also taught me to have respect and know my worth. Alex has been there at my best and worst moments. I can’t thank her enough for all the advice and good Times we had!
