Meet Myro Yartym | Wedding/Event photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Myro Yartym and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Myro, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
Taking risks is an inevitable part of life. Most of the time, risk is justified by the opportunity it presents. Therefore, when an opportunity arises, it often comes with some level of risk. In my opinion, it is very important to be able to differentiate a good opportunity from a bad one and take the right risk. Here is an example from my own life:
Before I started photographing weddings, I worked in a restaurant on a commission-based job, often earning only minimum wage or less. With bills to pay, it didn’t take long for me to start looking for higher-paying jobs. I had always been passionate about photography, and making a living from it was a dream of mine. I began reaching out to other photographers, primarily wedding photographers, to see if they needed assistance with their work. It took about 40 direct messages to find someone who needed a second photographer for an event.
He didn’t offer any payment, citing my lack of wedding photography experience and indicating that this would be a trial day. The wedding was on the weekend, which meant I had to miss one of my shifts at the restaurant. The venue was in a distant location, not accessible by public transport, so I had to take an Uber to get there. This opportunity came with a certain amount of risk: I would lose a decent amount of money and my manager would be unhappy with my absence from work.
Despite these risks, I decided to take the opportunity. My first wedding photography gig went very well, and two weeks later, the same person offered me my first fully paid second photographer job. I believe that event created a snowball effect and helped me get to where I am now.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Photography is an amazing passion accessible to anyone with a camera, and the community continues to grow. In such a saturated market, it is very difficult to stand out among others and compete with established corporations and long-time professionals. The best lesson I’ve learned is that there are no easy paths to success. Constantly evolving and implementing new ideas into your craft is the only way to remain competitive and stand out in the market.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
San Diego is a city that has something for everyone, whether it’s its stunning views, sunny and mild weather, some of the best seafood in the world, or a wide selection of attractions and places to visit. If my friend were coming to town, the first thing we’d do is go surfing at La Jolla Shores and check out the dolphins while we’re at it. After that, we’d grab some fish tacos from The Fish Shop in Pacific Beach. To finish the day, we could relax at Mission Bay and have a bonfire with s’mores. For the rest of the week, I’d make sure to take him on a hike at Iron Mountain Trail, climb a hill at Torrey Pines, explore some of the museums in Balboa Park, visit one of the Ballast Point breweries, and attend a Padres game at Petco Park, even if he isn’t a baseball fan.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Like most people who have achieved some degree of success, I wouldn’t be where I am without the support of those close to me. Throughout my photography career, there were times when I felt discouraged and questioned my career path. However, people like my girlfriend, Carolina, my parents, and my best friends, Emilio and Lukas, always cheered me up and reminded me of the importance of not giving up on my dreams, no matter how many curveballs life throws at me. I am incredibly grateful to have such amazing people around me.
