We had the good fortune of connecting with Mishayla Spendlove and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mishayla, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I am originally from Ogden, Utah, but we moved around A LOT. I went to 13 different schools from 1st grade to 12th, in three different states. Needless to say, I learned to be very adaptable to wherever I am and embrace change very quickly. It actually taught me to CRAVE change and I believe fueled an already restless spirit. It also helped to get me out of my shell as I tended to be a pretty quiet child and dealt with some social anxiety. It forced to me to connect with people quickly as I adjusted to always being the ‘new girl’. I believe it also kept me open and more fluid as I never like to be attached to any one ‘clique’ as a lot of kids tend to do and I ended up having unique friendships. This has definitely impacted who I am today as I am a very open individual and adapt to many situations with ease. It created a huge travel bug as I continued moving a lot, well into my 30s. I feed my soul with travel and seeing new places and meeting new people. I have also become someone who a lot of people can open up and connect with as I have a lot of unique experiences with living in so many places. I believe it has helped me become incredibly observant and non-judgmental which helps me on my path to becoming a better trainer and coach.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My career path has definitely been curvy and I feel like I have had many lives. Being a career bartender has taken me many places and has allowed me to connect to so many different walks of life. I DJ’d for quite a few years and that allowed me to feed my soul through music. I am now turning a new leaf and stepping into personal training, energy work and mindset coaching. I think what sets be apart from others is that I bring a unique approach to training as I come from a background of understanding addiction, alcoholism and extreme habits. Overcoming my own challenges with this gives me an empathetic arm to reach out with. I also have had to create a balance with many transitions in my life that have led me to learn that change can take time and it is how we react to the world around us that creates peace amidst chaos.
My brand began as simple personal training, but evolved into Balance Fitness & Wellness because my real passion is helping people find balance in their uneven lives when it comes to mind, body, and emotions.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Ooh I love this question! One of my favorite things to do is show people around a great city! I love LA so much because you can have a week of everything! I would take them on hikes around the valley. Places like Griffith Park, Malibu and Pacific Palisades. I would take them to the Arts District to show them the amazing graffiti art, the cute restaurants and Wisdom LA! I would take them to a Dodger, NFL or Kings game depending on the time of year, if not all of them! I would take them on a bike ride around Venice and Santa Monica and stop for Mexican food at Red O, burgers at Big Deans or tacos at Titi’s Tacos! I would take them to many of the beautiful rooftop bars to have a fun drink, listen to live music and take in the views of the valley or ocean; and if we have any time left at all, I would make sure to get them on a boat to Catalina for the day! Hiking has become my main escape to deal with mental health, and I love living in Southern California because it gives me the opportunity to hike as much as I like!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I honestly have to give a huge shout out to my best friend Amanda. She has been the one person who has always seen my full potential and has pushed me to do things that I never thought I could do. I tend to shy away from the spot light and used to like to keep to myself. She always gave me the courage and showed me how to take risks and learn new skills. She has always helped pull me out of my comfort zone and I am forever grateful. Without her, I don’t think I would have ever DJ’d on stage in front of a few thousand people, or moved cross-country to help run a nightclub, or become a model for a giant work of art. Without her, I wouldn’t be creating the business I have now as she was the one who insisted I read the book the Emotion Code, again, seeing a gift I didn’t know I had. I certified to become an Emotion Code Practitioner in order to strengthen my coaching abilities. She really has been my biggest mentor and she deserves so much credit for giving me confidence when I have needed it the most. Shout to the book ‘The Emotion Code’! A book that taught me to tap into my innate intuition in order to heal emotionally so I can teach others to do the same. Shout out to NASM, as that is who I am certified for personal training through, and the organization that keeps me studying to continue my education.
I also have to give a shout to my family who has always been there for me on my unique path that no one could have foreseen, and the friends that always have my back when I question if I am doing things right. I have some amazing people around me and I couldn’t be more grateful.
