We had the good fortune of connecting with Mindy Tanimoto and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mindy, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My tbought process for starting my business’s is a funny story. I have two boys and they both were in the modeling and acting community. We would always have to update headshots about every 3 months and it gets expensive to always pay for that. So I started taking the boys images myself. One day my oldest son Justin says to me, “Why don’t you find someone else to take their picture. I am tired of you always taking my photo.” I thought to myself that’s a great 💡 idea and I started connecting with other kids that were in the talent industry. I took classes and learned from other photographers. I teamed up with agents as their preferred photographer. Before you know it I had turned a complaint into a business.Â
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
It’s been a long journey to get to where I am at today. I found this is my true passion and I am so grateful I get to have the best job in the world. Seeing my clients faces when they see their galleries or reading their reviews in how they loved their session. I have been featured recently for my work in Wedding Chicks and The Knot and I am grateful and proud of my accomplishments. I have been able to travel due to my photography and hope to be able to continue doing so.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When I have any free time you can find me at the beach or any pool relaxing on a lounge chair. So I would have to say a fancy resort along the coast where we would spend the day pool side relaxing and reading magazines. Then we get all dressed up for dinner and go have some Mexican food ( it’s my favorite). We would be drinking some margaritas or tropical ice tea. Of course what is a trip without some shopping. I love to shop especially with your bestie..
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to do a shout out to my oldest son who gave me the idea to start my photography journey. I would like to thank all my mentors Sadi, Nicole, Staci, Jackie, for always pushing me further. And to all my clients and friends who entrusted their sessions to me. To all my models who let me practice taking their photos and not stopping till I was satisfied.
