We had the good fortune of connecting with Mina Streeter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mina, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I love this question. My work-life balance has drastically changed over the years and this is something I feel passionate talking about especially for young, female, entrepreneurs in the beauty industry. Looking back at the last 5 years of business, my first 3 years were definitely predicated on “toxic hustle” mentality and culture. I would service clients from 8am-11pm. I was working 10-15 hour work days with hardly any days off, solely because I was making really “good money” everyday. At 21-22, I was making making anywhere from $300-$600 a day doing lash extensions and seeing 6 figures by my second year of business…BUT all of that money at the cost of my mental and physical health. It seemed the more money I made, the more my mental and physical health declined. I started to experience burnout and I hated feeling that way. I loved being a lash artist, but not at the cost of my health paying the price. I was so fixated on working my butt off to ensure a better future for myself that my main focus was scaling my business at all costs, leaving myself the absolute last of my priorities. This had lead to seasonal depression, weight gain from neglecting myself and an ultimate loss of direction and sense of purpose. It took a lot of inner-work and self awareness to understand the reasoning behind my toxic hustle and grind mentality and that was rooted in a lot of my childhood and feelings of “lack” and “scarcity” embedded into my brain. If I could give advice to any beginner lash artists or service providers, it would be that not all money is GOOD money. I now feel like I have a great work-life balance. It took me years and lots of trial and error to find a balance and schedule that works well for my mental and physical health, I prioritize my health above anything else now. I take mental health days every week because that is what works for me and I give myself a lot more grace. If you are feeling unwell and unhappy, it is important to make the necessary adjustments you need to pour into your self. If you are feeling low and burnt out, it reflects in your business and all aspects of your relationships and life.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I started my lash business in the beautiful island of Guam where I am from in late 2017/early 2018. At the time, there wasn’t quite a demand for the service as much as there is now. Business was great in Guam and I was booked out weeks in advance. I moved to California in 2020 in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic for the sole purpose of starting a new life and expanding my business. I had to start my business back up from zero. I came here with 2 luggages to my name and knew absolutely no one here. It was difficult as I was going through a few health issues, adjusting to a new environment, major culture shock and other personal issues that affected my mental health, my confidence and above all… my spirit. I felt alone moving out here. I questioned if I had made the right decision. I have always felt like I had weight on my shoulders and I think that comes with every Asian/Pacific Islanders “idea” of “feeling the need” and feeling like you should be accountable to provide for your parents/family especially at a young age. I think failure and defeat are not often talked about in the industry. Moving out here required me to go back to the drawing board, make the necessary pivots and educate myself on effective marketing strategies to get my name out there in an industry where lash artists who are already established in the area had a greater advantage than I did. I took a few more lash courses myself out here and graduated beauty school because I knew this was something I wanted to make a long term career out of. By my 5th month here, I had gained a loyal clientele and my entire schedule was booked out. I credit that to being ambitious, relentless, pursuing further education and educating myself on marketing, branding and business. The journey has not always been easy but I wouldn’t change a thing about it. It has taught me valuable life lessons as well as molded and redefined my character as a person and woman in business.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
