We had the good fortune of connecting with Mila Fox and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mila, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I decided to pursue an artistic career, because, quite frankly, there is nothing that I love more in life than performance arts. It might sound cliche to some, but, what can I say?! It’s true. To be honest, this realization actually terrified me, for the longest time. Ever since I was young, I had always been passed off as the girl who was a “silly little dreamer.” When others asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I followed up with “a movie star.” Their curious smiles soon shifted to grimaces and confusion would immediately cloud their expression. My “aspirational” dreams to make it in the “City of Stars” was often contested with a variation of the following two questions:
“Do you know how hard that is?”
and/or
“That’s cool… So what’s your backup plan?”
I thought this internal burden to validate myself and my dreams would cease when I was accepted into Orange County School of the Arts, one of the most competitive middle/high schools in California. In fact, I was so excited to be immersed in an environment of like-minded creatives who I thought would have understood what it was like to be the odd one out. However, there, the question simply shifted from “do you know how hard that is?” to “do you know how hard that is for someone like “you”?
And by “someone like me” they meant someone with darker skin, voluminous curls and a different family background than those of which I was surrounded. My look didn’t fit their perception of “Big Hollywood” therefore their faith in my success dwindled. I mean, I get it. I feel there is still not enough diverse representation in the entertainment industry. However, there came a point in my life where I decided that I was no longer okay with accepting that mindset. I was no longer willing to suppress the heights of my dreams to fit the mold of the “reality” that others expected for me.
The criticism and negativity that I have endured serves as a source of motivation for me to keep going. To prove to myself and all of the other dreamers out there that anything is possible if you just believe. Personally, I believe it is the “dreamers” that end up changing the world. Performance started off as an escape from the severe bullying that I experienced in school, but soon turned into the greatest passion of my life. That, and one of the most fulfilling ways to connect with and inspire people around the world. To be fortunate enough to do that for the rest of my life is all that I could ever ask for.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My name is Mila Fox. I am an actor, model, fashionista, content creator and interdisciplinary creative. I have been working on TV/film sets since I was eight years old and I can’t imagine doing anything else. Learning about the different ways that one can express themselves through creativity is so exciting, and to see the way that performance and art impacts the world is simply beautiful. Currently, I am signed with Baron Entertainment in Sherman Oaks, CA and am super excited for the upcoming pilot season! I’m so ready to show the world what I have to offer.
I believe one of the biggest things that sets me apart from others is my constant effort to embrace authenticity. As many people know, the entertainment industry is one of the most cutthroat industries in the entire world, and many people will do whatever it takes to rise to the top, even at the expense of others. Being that one of my greatest fulfillments in life is bonding with others, the thought of using people to get where I need to be has never sat right with me.
I’ve learned that with great power comes great influence, and if there is one message that the world remembers me by, it is that authenticity and kindness shines brighter than anything else, and I hope to always demonstrate that through my words and actions.
I feel that is one of the biggest reasons why my performances are so powerful. No matter what character I am playing, I always find a way to tie them back into a part of myself or something I have experienced, for, one of the most beautiful things about life is that we are all connected in one way or another. My hope is to spread kindness and a sense of empowerment to everyone I encounter.
The most worthwhile things in life are often the most challenging ones that catapult us out of our comfort zone. I am currently living an East Coast/West Coast life. I am in my senior year in college, having attended both Rhode Island School of Design and Brown University for the last three years. At RISD, I am studying interdisciplinary arts and at Brown I primarily studied Theatre. I just finished up the Fall semester. During my winter break, I will be working on content creation and continuing to prepare for life in the Entertainment Industry after college before returning to Rhode Island for my final semester in February!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate this shoutout to my mom. She has sacrificed so much to help me pursue my dreams, and I could not be more grateful for her support and constant empowerment. From her, I have learned strength, resilience and the understanding that anything is possible in life so long as I do not give up.
