We had the good fortune of connecting with Miguel Falcón and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Miguel, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Success has only come when I have been given the ability to make my own decisions. As a business owner, I get to decide every part of how things are done, what things look like and who I work with. Of course the consequences of those decisions are not always easy, but it is an experience you don’t get when working for a large company. I am very proud of what I have built over the past 20 months, not just the structure but also a family of employees.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have been a pharmacist in San Diego for 22 years. In 2014, I was in between jobs and in that time I figured out what I really enjoy doing and learning about. I rediscovered regular exercise and made a commitment to not get trapped in the cogwheel of the corporate world. In 2017, a retail location in Barrio Logan presented me with 1000 square feet of creative space. My wife used the back conference room as her office and I transformed the office front into an art gallery. Local artists have decorated the walls and we were a welcome addition to the local art scene. Then the Covid pandemic hit and the gallery had to close. This became the perfect time to reimagine the space. I went through the permit and construction process to make the space into the only ice cream shop and art gallery in Southern California.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Would definitely hang out in Barrio Logan. My favorite Italian restaurant and coffee spot are both in the same neighborhood. Chicano Park and the Chicano Park Museum are a must see also. Imperial Beach has a nice laid back vibe and it also has one of my other favorite ice cream spots.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Firstly, my perseverance and work ethic I get from my immigrant parents. They were always working and fighting subversion to a fault. I worked many low paying minimum wage jobs when I was young. Most of them taught me what I was not cut out to do. I did learn how to work with and manage people though. Yes for the most part, I am self taught. I observe everything I can and commit it all to memory. Lastly, I must thank Clarissa, my wife of almost 20 years, for blazing a path on how to start a successful business.
