We had the good fortune of connecting with Micko and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Micko, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
After working in sales for almost 7 years I realized how my creativity had suffered from being so stressed, I couldn’t focus on anything else. For me the breaking point was going through a horrible PCOS flare and with the influx of emotions I realized I wasn’t happy where I was anymore, my mental and physical health had hit a low. I had a lot of self doubt but after some time I quit my job and signed up for cosmetology school. It was the best move I could’ve ever made.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Hairstyling has been such a fun career for me and I’m so happy to have chosen it! I love seeing people get excited over their new hair, it’s so rewarding knowing you made someone feel good! I’ve been lucky to have so much support from the start but for me being more on social media and putting myself out there has been the hardest. I went from posting about 4 times a year to almost daily and it hasn’t been easy due to self doubt and wondering if something is good enough to post but I believe people love to see someone just be genuine. I want people to see my brand and know they can be themselves without judgement or fear, I’m here to make people feel their best!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them to my favourite gastropub in downtown called Knotty Barrel, they have great food, so many drink options and amazing service! I enjoy driving around so I would take them from the beach to the mountains so they could see all of San Diego. I always love a good dive bar that plays classic rock and alternative, it just feels like home when I can listen to music in a cozy environment so that’s where we would finish the day!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to say thank you to everyone that’s been supporting me along this journey and to everyone that has trusted me with their hair! I really couldn’t have done it without my husband Ray, my mom, my best friend Alex, my best friend Emma, my dad, my future mentor Victoria and all the wonderful and supportive people I’ve met in this industry!
