Meet Michael Salazar | Owner/Perfumer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Michael Salazar and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Michael, what do you attribute your success to?
The fact that I am passionate about what I do. It’s not about money or image. It’s about being able to inspire others and to touch their lives with fragrance. It may seem silly to some. But there are people who use perfumes and colognes as a source of comfort, a way to boost self esteem, a way to connect with a past experience or memory. This is what makes us successful. Is being able to create that connection and show people we do more than just make fragrances.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
While some may not see it this way, but I believe that creating fragrance is as much an art as it is a science. While you have to know safety recommendations and how to control different reactions, you also need to have the artistic touch to be able to marry different components and aspects together and have the artistic eye and creativity to come up with them to begin with. All of our fragrances are made with quality and uniqueness in mind. We don’t want to create the same old boring designer fragrances you see in the shelves at the retail stores. We want to create unique and interesting fragrances that challenge your nose and your common perception of perfumes and evoke emotion. That’s what makes us different. We use the highest quality materials we can source from around the world and even make some things ourselves.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh man. So many amazing places. I’d say that North Park is definitely a place to take someone for the first time in San Diego. Lots of amazing places to eat and grab a drink. Cafe Calabria makes some amazing pizzas at night. La Jolla is a must for people who haven’t been to San Diego before. Hang out at the beach and see the seals. Or if they’re feeling adventurous, go swim with them! I have snorkeled out there many times and it still is an experience for myself no matter how many times I’ve done it. And Balboa Park. It has been a staple in my life, especially since childhood. Walking around the museums and even the zoo right next door. These are the things that come to mind.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
While I do this on my own and don’t have any employees. There are people who have really been my rock and support throughout this process. Who have helped me to keep going and to push in through the hard times. Most notably is my family. My Father is someone I’d like to dedicate this shoutout to. Since starting this venture, it has opened his eyes to a whole huge world. He looks at fragrances so much differently and has just immersed himself in it. He would sometimes message me about different ideas and call me saying “you should try this, or try that”. It has been really cool having him be so interested and want to be involved.
