We had the good fortune of connecting with Michael Cockroft and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Michael, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Starting my own business in 2012 was a decision driven by the desire for security and flexibility, both for myself and my family. Being part of the sports industry, I was well aware of the demands it placed on my time, often requiring me to work unsociable hours. With the knowledge that I was about to embark on starting a family, I recognized the importance of having a more flexible schedule. I gave myself a three to four-year window to prepare for this significant life change, and establishing my own business seemed like the best way to achieve the work-life balance I sought. It was a move that not only allowed me to be there for my family when they needed me but also provided a sense of security in an industry known for its unpredictability.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
What you are most proud of or excited about. Achieving a harmonious work-life balance, raising two wonderful children, being a supportive and loving husband, and successfully growing a startup business from the ground up are collectively my most significant achievements. These accomplishments reflect my dedication to both my personal and professional life, and I take great pride in the balance I’ve been able to maintain between the two.

How did you get to where you are today business-wise. Was it easy?
One defining moment in my entrepreneurial journey occurred in the early days of my business. It was a cold November night in the southwest suburbs of Chicagoland, during a board meeting with a club I was managing. The President made a motion to dissolve the current club, allowing my business to take over its operations. This pivotal moment was both daunting and exhilarating, marking the beginning of my solo venture. Despite the initial fear, I was driven by a deep-seated belief in my capabilities. Fast forward 12 years, and I am proud to say that the business has transformed from a modest operation with a handful of members to a thriving multi-million dollar enterprise. This journey has been a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of embracing challenges as opportunities for growth. –

Was it easy? Building and sustaining a successful business has never been easy. Over the years, the challenges have evolved, but the journey has always required dedication, resilience, and adaptability. In the early days, the hurdles were about establishing a solid foundation, gaining trust, and creating a brand identity. As the business has grown, the nature of the challenges has shifted. Now, in year 12, the focus is on scaling operations, maintaining quality, and staying ahead in a competitive landscape. Each phase has brought its own set of obstacles, but overcoming them has been part of the growth process. The journey has been demanding, but the rewards of building something meaningful and impactful have made it all worthwhile.

What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way?
In my journey as a business owner, I have experienced every role within the organization, and I remain committed to stepping in and assisting at any level when needed. I firmly believe in the importance of humility when assigning tasks to employees. It is crucial to ask oneself, “Would I be willing to do something I am asking of someone else?” For me, the answer is always yes. This approach not only fosters a collaborative and respectful work environment but also sets a positive example for the team, demonstrating that no task is beneath anyone, regardless of their position in the company.

What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?

The sports industry, particularly when it comes to clubs, can indeed be ruthless. Many new clubs attempt to fast-track their success by investing in national platforms or hiring influential coaches to boost membership. However, while these strategies might offer short-term gains, they don’t necessarily guarantee long-term success or sustainability.

In contrast, my approach has always been grounded in ethics and integrity. I firmly believe in doing the right thing, even when no one is watching. This principle has been a cornerstone of my business philosophy. It’s not just about making ethical decisions; it’s about creating a culture that values and rewards ethical behavior.

One of the critical factors in our success has been attracting and retaining the right people who share similar work ethics. This alignment in values has been instrumental in both employee retention and membership growth. When your team members believe in the mission and operate with integrity, it resonates with your members and creates a strong, loyal community.

In summary, while the industry might tempt businesses to take shortcuts for quick wins, I’ve found that a steadfast commitment to ethics, coupled with a focus on building a team with shared values, has been the key to sustainable success.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Chicago is one of the greatest cities in the world. Having traveled extensively, I’ve found that no place compares to the vibrant cultural and culinary scene of my home for the past 20 years. From Michelin-starred restaurants and dive bars to deep-dish pizza and hot dogs, the city offers an unparalleled diversity of experiences. My favorite spot is Gibson’s Steakhouse in the Gold Coast, where the Chicago cut with blue cheese topping, double-stuffed potato, and sautéed spinach never disappoints. Summers in Chicago are particularly special, with neighborhood festivals like the Belmont-Sheffield Music Fest bringing the sounds, smells, and tastes of the city to life. Before having kids, I was a regular at venues like the Vic Theater, Metro, and Schubas, enjoying the monthly bands. Now, with a family, I’ve shifted to a more relaxed pace, enjoying outings to Lincoln Park Zoo and day trips to Wrigleyville to catch a Cubs game. Life has changed, but my love for Chicago remains as strong as ever.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My journey as a business owner, father, husband, and friend has been shaped by a combination of personal values, upbringing, and the influence of those around you. Here are some ideas on how these influences have inspired where I am today:

Hard Working Ethics from Parents: My parents instilled in you the value of hard work, coming from a blue-collar background. This foundational principle taught me that success and rewards come from dedication and effort, shaping my approach to life and business.

Shared Values with Your Wife: My wife’s similar background and shared values have been a significant source of inspiration. Together, I’ve used this common ground as a blueprint for raising our children, emphasizing the importance of hard work and perseverance.

Supportive Friends with Similar Drive: Being surrounded by friends who share my drive and ambition has been crucial. Their influence has reinforced the idea that the environment you choose plays a pivotal role in shaping who I become.

Education and Independence: Being the first in my family to attend university and leaving home at 18 equipped me with self-sufficiency. This independence has been a guiding force in my life, influencing your approach to education, work, relationships, and ultimately, my role as a business owner.

The Importance of Environment: My experiences have underscored the belief that the environment I immerse myself in is critical to my success. Surrounding myself with like-minded individuals and fostering a supportive, ambitious atmosphere has been key to my growth as a business owner, father, husband, and friend.

These inspirations have not only shaped my personal and professional life but also serve as a testament to the impact of upbringing, relationships, and environment on one’s journey to success.
