Meet Melissa Tuvey | Wedding Planner and Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Melissa Tuvey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Melissa, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
This is a great question I know we’ve all asked ourselves in the past 2 and a half years! I approached this question in many facets of my life by asking the following questions:
Even if it’s hard, does it bring me joy?
Does it give me opportunities to balance with other aspects of my life (personal, work, life goals, relationships)?
Am I actually good at it/have positive results from it? Quite frankly, it’s pretty hard for me to give up. But, I think knowing when to refocus your efforts is a huge gift you can give yourself and the people in your life.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I knew right out of the gate that if I was going to succeed, I would have to respond the fastest and go the extra mile. Mind you, this was before Pinterest, social media and the like.
Conversely, I’ve learned that always pushing to the max every single day will make you less effective in the long run. Taking the time to breathe, and focus on forecasting, improving workflow and stepping up my creative game is now equally as important.
I believe in my brand wholeheartedly. Daily, I hear “Yes, I know you do weddings. But what’s your company name?” While I love all kinds of events, our lifeline will always be weddings of all shapes and sizes first and foremost.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Balboa Park. My family is deeply rooted in this area of town, and I personally got married at the Prado. I love listening to live music at Panama 66 and taking in a play at Old Globe. My favorite night time walk is walking the El Prado bridge, visiting the fountain outside the Natural History Museum and looking at the Botanical Building all lit up. During the day, I’m partial to visiting the koi at the Friendship Garden and hopping up on the stage when the Organ Pavillion is empty. In the spring, I take out of towners to the butterfly garden and absolutely love walking the Alcazar Garden. Stunning views of the tower and a fun place to let littles run around.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband. He keeps I Do Weddings & Events running behind the scenes in every possible way that you could think.
Mostly, having my back and giving me determination every day. But more importantly, reminding me to stop and rest.
And to the team–Jill, Caitlyn, Nicole, Natalie, Chelsea, Sam, Rhyana and the rest of our crew. WOW. I’ve never had to lean as hard on the team as I have in the last year. Thank you guys–I am forever in debt.
