We had the good fortune of connecting with Megan Root and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Megan, how do you define success?
My definition of success has changed significantly over the 28 years I have been an entrepreneur. Early on, my definition of success very much focused around the financial aspects. After many years of life experiences my view has definitely changed. Now my definition of success greatly revolves around relationships, inner peace, and happiness. Many people in my industry feel “its a numbers game” which it is, if financial success is your only focus. However, I have found much more personal success in creating lasting relationships with my clients and keeping my client’s best interest at the center of everything. The most successful transactions start with clients that lead to friendships and knowing that I treated my clients as if they were my family. Having the focus be on my client’s best interest has actually lead me to much more financial success than when I was primarily focusing on that.

What should our readers know about your business?
Milestone Properties is a boutique real estate brokerage based in San Diego and serving all of California. Milestone opened their doors in 2004 to assist buyers and sellers in the homebuying process with the real estate portion as well as their mortgage loan. At the same time the financial crisis of In 2007 hit I was personally going through a divorce and embarking on being a full time single Mom to my daughter, who was 3 at the time. With all of the shifts personally and within the industry, Milestone also shifted. My focus changed to the quality of the business and not the quantity of the business. Many people, especially in the financial industry, look back to those days being dismal times. I look back and see my greatest years of growth. I took the time to grow and learned what I really wanted personally and professionally. I shifted from spending my days being too busy with the business growth and general maintenance of a large office to going back to working directly with clients, keeping a much smaller core group of excellent real estate agents that share my values. For me, at the time, smaller was much better. I was able to fall in love with a career I had begun to get burnt out on. All of the changes definitely weren’t easy and came with a lot of “growing pains”. Overall, I feel thankful I learned a lot of lessons personally as well as professionally that some people never learn. It has given me a completely different perspective and sense of empathy and compassion for others. Even though it was the most difficult years, they were also some of the greatest. Those years allowed me to slow down and really decide how I want to make a difference in my industry and spend time as a Mom. One of my favorite things to do, is to sit down with people and put together a step-by-step plan to accomplish their dreams. There are so many people who think homeownership is impossible because they have credit issues, can’t save for a down payment, or whatever other obstacle they feel they have in their way. I love showing them it can be done and giving them the road map to make it happen. Although I am still working with clients as usual, I am also currently working on a big project that is completely different from what I typically do, but still in real estate. Keep an eye out….big things are on the horizon.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This question is tough. San Diego is such an amazing city with a ton to do. One of my favorite places in the city is Torrey Pines. I would take them to the bottom of the hill where we would park and walk up the paved road and then hike down the trail to the beach and walk along the water back to the car. Then we could head south to Old Town for a great lunch at Old Town Mexican Cafe…of course bringing back some fresh tortillas for later. After, we would walk around and see the start of this great city. Another day we could go to Balboa Park and walk around through museums or even walk the stairs of the California Tower. The view from there is amazing. If there’s a play at the Old Globe then we should definitely see a show there. That’s such a great intimate venue. If we are lucky enough that it’s the right time of year and there’s a show then definitely a concert at Humphrey’s would be on the agenda. Although we are known for our beach life we also have some great mountain towns so close by. Julian would be fun for apple picking or a visit to an old gold mine. Of course, no visit to Julian is complete without some apple pie and some hard cider from Julian Cider. Idyllwild would also be a fun day trip. The absolute best coffee anywhere would be from Chris and Katie at Black Mountain Coffee. They ship the coffee beans in from all over the world and roast them by hand right there. La Casita would be our choice for dinner in Idyllwild- the salsa alone is worth the drive. Lastly, we would take a trip to the downtown waterfront and park by the Star of India, and walk along the waterfront to where we would take a Hornblower cruise and then grab some Brigantine fish tacos and a Ketch beer at the Portside Pier. We would finish that day with a visit to the Old Point Loma Lighthouse. Of course we would be stopping throughout the week at some of our many amazing breweries and wineries.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
How do I pick just a few? There’s so many people along the way that have had influence on my career all these years. For sure, I would definitely like to recognize my daughter Kenzie and my husband Paul. They are always there to support me, encourage me, and put up with my crazy schedule. My parents also deserve a big thank you for all the years growing up, I tirelessly practiced my negotiation skills.
