We had the good fortune of connecting with Marisol and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marisol, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
There are a few moments throughout my life where I’ve faced this question. Should I keep going or do I give up? Most of the time the easy answer would be to give up, that way we don’t have to put in more effort or feel disappointed. The thing that I realized is that the easy way out is never going to make us grow, become better, face our fears or accomplish our goals. To keep going despite the obstacles is what makes it worth it in the end. With my blog, I’ve wanted to give up so many times but when I remember why I started it and realize that I still love doing it, it gives me the motivation I need to keep working on it. For me, as long as I know it will make me happy in the end, no matter how long it will take. I will always try my best and keep going.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve always been interested in fashion. I love the way an outfit can speak about someone’s personality or help them convey how they are feeling in that particular moment. I started @stylingthebasics as a creative outlet, a place where I could share my style with people and inspire others to take risks with their clothes. It hasn’t always been easy, the thing about Instagram and its ever-changing algorithm is that you have to adapt and do specific things if you want to grow on the platform. Because this is my hobby, I sometimes find it hard to create content and get discouraged when I don’t see the results I want, but when I get a message or a comment from someone about how they like my content or that I’ve helped them, it’s all worth it. Starting this blog has slowly helped me navigate an industry that I did not know and has opened doors for me that get me closer to my dream.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would start having brunch at Morning Glory, the food and drinks there are so good and the aesthetic of the place is so beautiful, very instagramable. Then I would go to Coronado Island rent a bike, get an ice cream and walk along the beach waiting for the sunset. Gaslamp Quarter would be my last stop, the street lights up and has amazing restaurants and bars to enjoy the night.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my best friend, Celesthe. Everyday I get inspired, motivated, pushed (in a good way), and encouraged by her to be better and do better. Since I’ve known her she has helped me see the positive side to life, appreciate the little things, and has encouraged me to go after my dreams, even the crazy ones. I look up to her and admire how she has built her business (@somosnarrativa) from the ground up and works on it every day to make an impact in the world.
