Meet Marika Segal | Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Marika Segal and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marika, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I would feel numb and dead inside if I didn’t. I have always felt drawn to art my whole life ever since I was a child through painting and animation. I feel that I’m fulfilling my souls yearning and I feel a deep sense of purpose by pursuing some thing that I love such as visionary, surrealistic art and the joy it brings to other people adults and children alike.
It’s been a bumpy road financially at times but I have no regrets. I get to be my own boss which is great. There is massive potential for it to blossom more financially through many different unforeseen exciting and adventurous opportunities for my art to manifest into many different projects along the way.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art shows the universe within humans, animals and objects in the form of bright colors, nebulas, stars galaxies, planets, etc. I love to show our innate uniqueness as well our oneness with all of universal creation. I get excited about the bright choice of colors to choose from as well as any deep meaning that arises from the painting.
There were points that were easy along the journey such as getting into my first gallery in Laguna Beach back in 2013 and there were other times when I was really hard when I faced legal obstacles to attempting to get my first mural project started in San Clemente which didn’t pan out in 2017. It wasn’t until I found an area in Dana Point and in 2019 I started a kickstarter for my first mural at Kawamata Seafood, A delicious poke bowl restaurant in Capistrano Beach.
I have learned that I could either fight against the walls being placed against my artistic path or like water I could flow to where there was a path of least resistance and where my art would be most welcomed to be created, especially when getting my first mural painted. I want people to know that there’s always a way even if it doesn’t happen when you want it, where you want it or how. If you’re patient and open minded there’s always a way to get things done. Believe me the setbacks do suck but it is much worse to give up permanently especially when it comes to your art and your passion. And then there are the precious triumphs that weave the unique tapestry of your hero’s journey.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If they love poke’s bowls I would definitely take them to Kawamata Seafood since they have the best poke bowls I’ve ever tasted. For cooked seafood I would say the Fishermans is the best. Pines park in Dana Point is the best park with the most beautiful view overlooking the ocean. I would take them to Laguna Beach and Dana Points beach’s and San Clemente Pier. For tasty yogurt Active Culture has the best yogurt.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to thank my family and friends for always encouraging me to pursue my art as well as financially supporting my art as well as my first mural project in the Dana Point area at Kawamata Seafood.
