We had the good fortune of connecting with Magda & Christian Flores and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Magda & Christian, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When we started Sweet and Spicy, we honestly had no idea it would grow into what it is today. We didn’t set out expecting to build a brand or make something big—we just knew we wanted to start something of our own. It was a risk. We took a leap without knowing what would come of it, but we believed in the idea and in ourselves. And somehow… it worked. It grew. People connected with it. And now we’re here, still doing what we love and growing more than we ever imagined

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Getting here was far from easy. Like many small business owners, we started with a passion and a vision but the path from idea to execution was anything but smooth. There were moments of doubt, financial hurdles, long nights, and a ton of learning through trial and error.

But what kept us going was the response from the community. Every time someone told us, “I’ve never tasted anything like this before” or “I need more of that sauce,” it reminded us why we started. We took every setback as a lesson, not a failure, and slowly built something real and sustainable. Along the way we have learned that it’s okay to ask for help or outsource what you can’t do alone. Take the time to celebrate small wins — they matter. Sweet and Spicy SD is for the people who crave something different — something bold, something memorable. We’re not here to blend in. We’re here to stand out, stay rooted, and serve up flavor with purpose.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend were visiting the area, I’d kick things off with breakfast at The Original Pancake House it’s a must. From there, we’d plan a beach day, but not without making a quick stop at Sweet & Spicy SD to grab some snacks for a picnic. We’d end the day watching the sunset at Carlsbad Beach, soaking in the view with good food and even better company.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We owe so much of our journey to the people who’ve supported us along the way. To our incredible community—thank you for showing up, spreading the word, and believing in us. Your support is the reason Sweet and Spicy has become what it is.

To our family and friends who’ve been by our side since day one—thank you for lifting us up, encouraging us, and always having our backs. As a husband-and-wife team balancing business and family life, it hasn’t always been easy. We also want to give a special thank you to everyone who’s ever looked out for our son when we’ve been working late or juggling a packed schedule. Your help has meant more than words can say. This journey has been a true team effort, and we’re so grateful for every bit of love and support we’ve received
