Meet Lynn Abaté-Johnson

We had the good fortune of connecting with Lynn Abaté-Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lynn, how do you think about risk?
Part of why I love start up life and working with start ups is that there is always inherent risk.
I believe that without risk, our learning is limited.
Recently, I saw a quote (source: unknown) that really resonates with me: “make three mistakes today and call it research”.
For me and the clients I work with, when we view our mission and purpose as simply commitments to growth and learning through service to others, everything else seems to take care of itself. There is always going to be some amount of drama and trauma, however, when we take risks, knowing that we can’t control every aspect of business growth, while doing our best to mitigate issues, things seem to work out over time.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’ve created an engaging and “edu-training” curriculum (offered online) called #ShowUpYOU. This course help brands, entrepreneurs and collaborative teams understand and implement ways to show up authentically, and sometimes vulnerably, so that they can attract their ideal communities locally and globally.
I’ve been customer-facing in business since I was nine years old. I learned lessons from my parents and grandparents about how to make prospects and customers feel so warmly welcomed and appreciated that they refer friends, family, and colleagues. This is what I consider a “lost art”.
In my course and with my 1:1 consulting & training, I teach others in business how to “speak human” and build solid, loyal communities at scale, regardless of the product and services they offer.
I believe that humans long for connection and belonging.
I teach, train, and consult brands how to attract and retain raving customers who feel appreciated.
I have learned some lessons the hard way. For example, I had to “fire” a client in my early years because I did not manage their expectations, so I could tell that I was ineffective (after trying many different approaches) after the first month of working together. The relationship was imbalanced, and I had to let that client go, even though they were (at the time) my highest-paying client. It was a painful lesson, because I am a recovering people pleaser, so I learned a lot from that experience.
I’ve been an entrepreneur and an employee in my decades of work-life. I have learned from every customer and brand I’ve worked with, so I consider it all “research” and apply it to how I train and consult others today.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I LOVE LOVE LOVE my beautiful beach town of Oceanside, California (situated at the north end of San Diego County), about two hours south of Los Angeles.
When people visit, we hang out at the beach, walk on the pier, stop into my favorite shops and restaurants, plus there is a handful of amazing coffee shops that are locally owned and run as well.
On Sundays, the local fisheries display fresh catches at the harbor, and there are also other great vendors selling all kinds of goodies, like coffees, pastries, gorgeous plants, art, and much more.
Thursdays, you’ll find us at the morning Farmer’s Market, where we pick up all our fresh produce, and sometimes a delicious lunch.
Once a month, across the street from our house at the South O Brewing Company, there’s a fun car show with vintage cars cruising in and hanging out to show off their gorgeous automobiles. There’s also Tuesday night Trivia and Wednesday night Bingo at South O. It’s all so fun. The people are always warm and welcoming in O’side.
There is always great people-watching at the beach, on the strand. I walk there a lot – many times a week.
Occasionally, I also roller skate with the local Oceanside Roller Skating community at the Pier Amphitheater and on the strand a couple days a week.
There is always so much happening in Oceanside that I always say “if you are bored in O’side, it’s your own damn fault!”.
