We had the good fortune of connecting with Lori Felix and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lori, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I was raised in New England to very thrifty parents. My dad was a school teacher and my mom stayed at home with four kids. She knew how to stretch a dollar and I thought everyone did.

Flash forward to when I was raising my kids, I wanted to stay home for a season and knew part of my new job was to tighten up our finances.

I went back to my roots and started clipping coupons, finding recipes for budget-friendly meals, hunting for promo codes, buying secondhand, and asking for hand-me-downs from friends. I started my blog in 2009 just as a way to share my tips with my friends and family and as a place to organize the articles about saving money, I had torn out of magazines.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I worked on my blog in the evening and on the weekends and worked full time at a medspa as a patient coordinator and also did their marketing. I enjoyed both jobs. My children were raised and my time was my own. After about 5 years, my boss told me she was parting ways with the medspa and starting up her own in a new location. She asked me to come with her but I wondered if I could make a good income from my blog if I focused on it full-time.
By the end of the second year of working for myself, I doubled the salary I made from working at the medspa with the income I was making as a blogger and affiliate marketer.
I was not a young woman and at times would get intimidated by the technology and the constant changes needed to stay current. I’m proud to say that I may not be the fastest learner, but I don’t quit!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m looking forward to my sister visiting me this summer. I will take her to Roger’s Gardens to admire the beautiful flowers and plants. We will have lunch in the Farmhouse Restaurant on the property. Next, I will take her to Fashion Island to admire the beautiful people and their dogs, followed by a drive down PCH. We will have dinner in Laguna Beach and end the day at The Pageant of the Masters. What a perfect day!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mother taught me that happiness does not come from possessions. She taught me how to separate a want from a need and also how blessed it is to give to others. One of my fond memories of her is when she visited me here in Southern California and I took her to the mall. When we got back to my car (it was a long walk), she realized a cashier had given her $5 too much in change. Without hesitation, we went back to the store to return the $5 to the startled cashier. Many of my life lessons were from observing her.
