We had the good fortune of connecting with Lili Alice Walker Stiefel and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lili Alice Walker, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I love creating and building community. I started to notice I have knack for putting together systems for strategic and structural improvement. I made opportunities to increase my tool set and adaptability, the businesses came naturally from there. I iterate. I do things over and over again and make them better each time around. I wanted to do my own thing my own way and be my own boss.

My thought process behind starting ‘The Mixed Space’ wasn’t as much a “thought” process as a “feel”process. I needed to create an opportunity to build community that reflects my own multidimensional identity. I’m biracial, bi-lingual, tri-Continental, I‘m a third culture kid – it can be difficult to feel a sense of belonging in the world.

I felt confused

I felt insecure

I felt curious

what if brave, brilliant people met up to speak boldly about their opinions and experiences on their identity journey? What if we collectively agree to tending to this community with benevolent hearts and grounded vulnerability? I want to tell people they are special and have inherited enormous legacies and I want to discover those together.

What should our readers know about your business?
You belong. You are welcome. You are enough.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to Maria P. P. Root. Maria P. P. Root is a clinical psychologist, educator, and public speaker. Her areas of work include multiracial families, multiracial identity, cultural competence, trauma, workplace harassment, and disordered eating. She is an international authority on mixed heritage identity, credited with publishing the first contemporary work on mixed-race people. She has presented lectures and training in various countries, both in and outside of academia. We don’t know each other personally but her work is a major part of The Mixed Space foundation.
Additionally there are two other wonderful women who have made incredible contributions and I have had the pleasure of working with them:
