We had the good fortune of connecting with Lidya Hernandez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lidya, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
I would have to say that one thing outsiders are probably unaware of about my industry (graphic design) is that the time that it takes to design a logo or a graphic comes with years of practice so I can able to set my price on the value of my work. I have been asked why it cost so much if it take such a short time, and that is the point our time and knowledge to do it in that time is valuable.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
It has been quite the journey. I started my business in 2015 after I graduated with my Associate Degree. I was a new mom at the time, which I enjoyed the first years of motherhood. My business was more of a hobby at the beginning, until 2016 that I joined the community from the town I lived I started to advertise my business that it started to grow. Something that I am proud of that I kept going, with doubts and fear I pushed through it. I think one the biggest obstacles I had was myself! We all start as beginners on everything we do, I wouldn’t accept that for a long time. I wanted to be an expert on everything, from knowing how to brand my business to know how to be efficient with my time. Lastly, the best advice I can give someone starting their business or that is thinking about it is “Do it scared, you will be ok”.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If we talk about a weeklong visit from my best friend. First stop would be a restaurant called Kicking Kasian to eat the absolute best and most delicious king crab legs with shrimp. Next stop would be a few days at the beach, go for beach sidewalk, eat at the popular restaurants. She works full time so the trip would be more of a relaxing trip for her and I. Definitely, lot of eating because what is better than food.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Definitely there is one person who has always believed in me and is the one person who pushed me to get my degree, open my own business, and believed in my talent. My kids’ dad is who throughout the years has been the one reassuring me and getting me out of my comfort zone to be where I am today. I appreciate him for that because of my fear of getting in debt with a student loan, fear to FAILURE I would not have done it.
