We had the good fortune of connecting with Leah Varney and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Leah, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Prior to my photography career, I owned a day spa and worked as an esthetician for over a decade. As a result, I’ve continued to have a self motivated mind set which is necessary to starting and running your own business. That being said, I didn’t necessarily go into photography thinking it would be my next business venture. I just loved taking pictures and people started taking notice. This organically led to inquiries about photo sessions and just kept growing from there.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
There are talented photographers everywhere in San Diego and I recognize how blessed I am when people choose to book with me. I’ve been told by previous clients that they feel extremely relaxed and at ease during my sessions. I do believe this is partly what sets me apart from others. I have a lot of experience in front of the camera, therefore, it makes it very easy for me to guide and coach clients to achieve optimal images. I communicate extensively before each session to know EXACTLY what the client expects so that I can deliver just that. I also have an eye for framing and angles which adds a level of artistry that I feel is unique. I am still somewhat new to this industry so I am constantly learning and growing each time I take on a new project. I am not the most technologically advanced, so I I’ve struggled with my editing software, my computer, and even with my camera sometimes! The fact of the matter though, is one way or the other I get through it and come out better and more knowledgeable on the other side. When I think about my brand and what I’ve accomplished, I can’t help but to feel proud of all the hurdles I’ve overcome just by being persistent and not giving up. My brand is all about the overall experience from your initial interaction with me, your ease during the session, all the way to the final delivered results.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I absolutely love being a San Diego tour guide! The beauty of this city is there are countless things to do I I can always cater visits to each individual. Some highlights would include: Seal Beach in La Jolla followed by a drink on the roof at George’s Cove. I love taking people to Mission Beach for amazing people watching. Catching a sunset at Sunset Cliffs in Ocean Beach is an absolute must. I always recommend the harbor cruise and/or a whale watch. A cruise through Balboa Park is always a good time and you just can’t beat the San Diego Zoo!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to recognize my mother for always supporting me know matter what paths I’ve decided to take. My mother has always been extremely hard working and I like to think I learned by her example. As a crazy young adult, she always did her best to give advice without judgement or shame. She continues to be my biggest cheerleader and source of support. I wouldn’t be where I am today without her.
