We had the good fortune of connecting with Laura Neuzeth and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Laura, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind my success as a content creator have been authenticity. Whether that was being very open about discovering the world of manga as an adult, or owning up to the fact that I love rhythm games but am an average player. I have never been shy to show my followers who I am and occasionally poke fun at myself.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a millennial otaku who dived right into the world of manga after being a longtime anime fan during the pandemic. I began posting videos about the manga series I discovered in hopes that it would reach other adults who perhaps needed to spark some joy and heal their inner child, and the videos immediately took off. Gaining a big following so quickly is both a blessing and curse, I did encounter my fair share of ageism due to being in my 30’s posting about media that is deemed “childish” by people. Also posting content about media that is so male dominated, I’ve also encountered misogyny.
I want everyone to know that women definitely deserve to be included in fandom spaces, and our voice hold a lot of power. I’ve always known that to be an online creator you need to have thick skin, but you also need to learn to curate your content to your own demographic. If someone outside your community finds your content and thinks its horrible then their voice should not hold more value than the people who choose to support you.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had a friend visiting me wanting to do nerdy things I would first take them to Balboa Park because of the variety of museums including the San Diego Comic-Con museum. From there if they wanted to go shopping for anime/manga I could take them to Kearny Mesa to hit up stores such as Book-Off and Tokyo Central and Main. While we’re there we can go eat in that area since it has the best ramen, udon, and kbbq spots.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate this shoutout to my followers across my social media platforms. As much as they gain from my content, I have been exposed to so many people all around the world that I can learn from! I am very lucky to have such diversity in my community. It’s truly a blessing to get to interact with my community.
