Meet Kyle Butts | Owner and Builder at Happy Cable Company

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kyle Butts and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kyle, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
During COVID early on there weren’t a lot of things you could do outside of the house anymore. As a musician who played in a band for over a decade I was always fixing and tinkering with cables and my guitars. I saw an opportunity to offer custom boutique cables that would match the growing custom guitar space. All of my friends online at Modern Guitarist (a Facebook group I helped create with friends) and myself love the idea of getting custom guitars fitted to our specs and needs. Why not do the same thing with cables? We offer endless customization to fit your gear with the highest quality cables on the market instead of the same old boring, cheap black cables. Because there was so much negativity and anxiety in the world at the time I found it fitting to call the brand Happy Cable Company because regardless of the climate of events surrounding everyday life, music makes people HAPPY!

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Happy Cable Company is a bespoke boutique cable company offering the highest quality music cables with endless options to customize and make each customer’s offering special to them.
Every Happy Cable is hand crafted to each individual with unique color options like blood splatter, sparkle and multi-color. What I am most proud of is the undying support of every customer and artist who has used a Happy cable. Without the support and love of everyone who has bought a cable the business would not be growing as fast as it is.
As far as business is concerned, I have always been an entrepreneur even though I have always had a full time job in the construction industry. As a high schooler I did freelance graphic design. In college I studied graphic design and had a side hustle as a designer, web creator, flash designer, and a silkscreener where I sold t-shirts and posters. I also did a ton of commissioned work in every space.
Starting and operating my own business has opened my eyes to the numbers side of business. It has forced me to learn so many new skills. Dealing with taxes and licensing, managing inventory on a larger scale, and my time constraints as a business owner, father of two, husband, and full time employee to my other career. I am an avid listener of Dave Ramsey so running a debt free business is extremely important to me and helps drive my financial decisions. The hardest thing about owning a business is making sure you can pay your bills, your taxes, save for the future and pumping the necessary amount of money back into the growing business.
The biggest lesson I have learned is to never be impulsive. Nothing is ever so important that you can’t spend a few hours to days thinking about the next step and decision. Be smart and think short term and long term,
What I want the world to know about Happy is that the company is all about the music and the musicians. Every order is focused on providing the most we possibly can to each musician and giving them a personal touch. It’s all about each individual and letting them know they are part of a bigger family and not just another customer/order/number.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would definitely take them to PB and downtown SD. If someone has never experienced the beach atmosphere of San Diego, they are missing out. I lived in Pacific Beach for years and also spent a lot of time in Encinitas at the various bars and restaurants. The views of the beach are second to none.
As far as downtown San Diego, where do I begin? (haha) Check out a local hidden gem in the Gaslamp called Taste & Thirst. The food and drinks are to die for and the happy hour cannot be beat. Hit House of Blues for concerts and check out Balboa Park or the missions close by for the historic lesson in San Diego culture.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Bryan Capriglione and the other dudes at Modern Guitarist on Facebook. Our goal was to create an online space in the guitar community that pushed positivity and togetherness in the music world. A bunch of the dudes in the community own and operate their own music related businesses as well as help smaller companies rise up and succeed. Bryan is the mastermind behind the idea of the community and without him and MG I don’t think Happy would be where it is today.
