Meet Kirk Moeller | Architect and Developer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kirk Moeller and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kirk, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started my firm in 2019. At the time, I had been working for an architecture firm for over 20 years. The company I was working for was going through some internal changes and I felt that it was time for me to make a change. I decided to try starting my own firm instead of pursuing other employment options. It turned out to be one of the best decisions I have made in my life. That decision has led to many interesting opportunities.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started my career as a young architectural draftsman just out of college with very little experience. I fortunately found a job within a firm that employed excellent designers as well as technically advanced individuals. Over the years, I slowly learned these important aspects of the architectural trade. Eventually, I felt it was time to take the next step, which was to acquire my architectural license. I began taking exam prep courses and studying. I studied for each of the 8 exams daily after work. It took me a few years to pass all exams as I was working full time while trying to study as much as possible. Persistence paid off and I finally acquired my architectural license. Acquiring my license and many years of work experience are what led to my ability and desire to start my own firm.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in North County Carlsbad area and spend a lot of time at the beach and visiting favorite restaurants. Therefore, I would take them to a few of the more interesting local beaches like Swamis, Cardiff Reef, the Oceanside Pier, etc. I would also take them to some of our favorite local restaurants. I would also try to catch a Padres game if they were in town and show them around some of the downtown San Diego sights and attractions.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Yes, there are two people that I would like to recognize. First, I would like to recognize the late Ed McArdle. Ed was my boss and mentor at my previous company and was responsible for enlightening me with his amazing architectural design skills. Second, I want to recognize Andy Kjellberg who was an old co worker. Andy was responsible for teaching me many technical architectural aspects that are only learned through experience.
