We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelsey Jolly-Majstorovic and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kelsey, how do you define success?
I define success as being happy, content and proud of the work you put in day in and day out. I don’t put a dollar amount to it or count awards on a shelf, necessarily. But I think my version of success is waking up every day, loving what I do, giving it 100% effort, and being able to look myself in the mirror when I go to bed. That has always been my personal version of success. Money, awards, accolades… I think all of that comes when you are doing the right thing and have good intentions!
What should our readers know about your business?
I am most proud to be different. What I mean by different is I truly try to care, talk to, and treat my clients like I am close friends with them. I don’t want them to view me as someone sitting in my office and disengaged from their loan process. I want them to always feel like I am one call, text, email away and that I care for them, and genuinely make their experience great. I had some lucky breaks and help along the way for sure, just like most people. But I also had to dig deep within myself and continue pushing onward even when it didn’t seem logical. I would say the hardest thing I overcame was believing in myself. I settled at times with employers and bosses who would have me believe I was not capable due to experience, knowledge, age, etc. The hardest part was telling myself those things weren’t true and that I COULD do things, despite the odds. Negativity is always easy to give into. Being positive and pushing on is always more challenging. I’ve learned to not settle for status quo or less than your best. I learned that the belief in your core is more important than anything else. I want the world to know and be able to tell that I am a fighter, in life and on their loans. That I am equally as strong, yet kind and compassionate. It’s a strange balance, but I feel I do it well and I love what I do. The joy of putting clients into a home, especially those that it is a challenge for, makes my days worthwhile.
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
Oh man!! Well if you know me at all, you know “fun” is pretty much my middle name. I love to explore and be outside and am usually up for any spontaneous event. I would take them to eat at Republic Grille, Pappasitos, The Refuge, Burgers & Bordeaux. I would take them kayaking on Lake Woodlands and go explore the local Nature Preserves & Spring Creek Trail. Walking along the Waterway, Market Street and Hughes Landing is always beautiful and a great place to feel surrounded by community. For drinks, the Refuge again has fantastic drinks. Local Pour has a great scene. If there were any concerts, definitely take them to a concert at the Pavilion. If it’s rodeo season, definitely take them to the rodeo (the actual rodeo and concert – don’t forget the turkey legs!). I would also take them an Astros Baseball game and the Aquarium.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are actually so many people to thank, I don’t think I have enough room. Everyone along the way has served a purpose in my growth. That can be a good interaction and even a bad one. I think every person who says something nice or something mean can contribute to your growth or success – just depends on how you take it. Tom Cox Jr. asked for me to work his company’s account several years ago and that was really a turning point in my career. The faith and belief in me as a person and professional gave my confidence such a boost and I will always be grateful for that opportunity. I do have a mortgage mentor in Kelly Malatesta, who I look up to and who is just a wonderful person to have as a leader in my field. She also is someone that I aspire to be like one day as an Originator. My husband, Djuro Majstorovic, has really been a rock for me while I found my career in the mortgage world. He comes from an extremely humble background and had to fight for all of his opportunities, being that he was not born in America. I admire his strength and perseverance and I want my work to honor him the way he deserves. I would say one shoutout I cannot omit is the sport of softball. This has probably been the heaviest influence for my professional success. I had amazing teammates who pushed me as a player and person and coaches who taught me life lessons that can easily be applied to business. I was pushed so far psychically and mentally that I really feel it attributes to my “get things done” mentality. I will forever be grateful I played!
