We had the good fortune of connecting with Keisha Garner and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Keisha, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
It actually started as a hobby initially, one of my good friends had mentioned that she would be starting a Luxury Picnic business and for months would tell me I should as well. She kept saying how I would be good at it because I have a good eye when it comes to decorating for parties/holidays. I never really thought much of it and I finally had a discussion with my sister and my daughter to see if this is something they would want to do with me. They were on board so I decided to do some research and spoke to a lawyer to see what the financial costs would be and how I could protect myself and assets. I started to purchase decor and items and launched in May of this year. I wasn’t sure if I would even get any bookings but just decided hey lets see what happens. The first week of launching I had several bookings and was excited, it is a lot of work and most people don’t realize what it takes to make the “magic happen’ but in the end I enjoy what I do. I love seeing the initial reaction of my clients. Their reaction is what makes me keep going.
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
SitNSipEventsSD is a black owned small business that specializes in Luxury Picnics and Tablescapes. What sets us apart is that we are affordable. We also offer “mini picnics” for those who would like something a bit more intimate and our “bubble tent experience” for those who prefer the inside feel but being outdoors. We work with multiple chefs to provide special requests including Vegan/Gluten Free options. Don’t expect to have overnight success, but with hard work and perseverance you will get to where you want to be. Don’t compare yourself to other businesses, just keep working and focus on your own company. I am proud of how much my business has grown but looking forward to what the future has in store.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Soon as she arrives we will head straight to the taco shop, its a MUST!!! You can’t come to San Diego without going to the San Diego Zoo, its considered one of the most largest in the United States. Balboa Park would be my next recommendation because of the museums, gardens and historical buildings. For some nightlife action I would say Gaslamp Quarter, you can go to a bar, restaurant or a club all in one area. Seaport Village is nice to stroll and enjoy the waterfront. We are lucky to have year round sunshine so the beaches would be a must and we have so many options. San Diego has so many great restaurants, night life, shopping I wouldn’t be able to even show my best friend around in just one week.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to thank several of my friends who were models and allowed me to either do their baby shower or birthday picnic for mock setups and practice. By doing this it allowed me to perfect my set ups and the details. I am grateful for my friend Tina for giving me the nudge to start and of course my daughter Emani and sister Tiffani for helping me out when they are available. My clients are also my motivation because their reactions keep me going.
