We had the good fortune of connecting with Katy Parsons and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Katy, can you tell us about a book that has had a meaningful impact on you?
The Celestine Prophecy Series has had a huge impact on my life in a variety of situations. Professionally I have often found myself between design teams and technical teams, throw in a few fabrication teams and upper management and you can have a receipe for disaster. The Insights in the series showed me how to continually look at the bigger picture – people may enter your life to learn something from you and then leave, and you may never be aware of it; how to never assume you know anything about anyone in a room – who they are or how they may help you (vise versa); and how there is no difference in sharing sad, bad, happy, or exciting times with people – it’s all just a transfer of energy that happens in the moment of you need.

Bottom line – pay attention! Don’t get wrapped up in your own work, process, or success. Life is limited and everything in this world is worthless in the big picture!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I do several things.

My education is in Fine Art (BFA) and Modern Art Theory (MA) and I have been professionally showing paintings since 2002. I have tangible works in many private collections in the United States and my digital work has been selling internationally for the last three years.

My professional life in the entertainment industry took off nearly simultaneously as my education. I tour with music acts as lighting crew chief and designer, I VJ alongside DJs mixing live visuals, and I design and produce immersive environments.

All of these worlds have clashed over the last 10 years as art and technology become unified through cultural, music and art events. However it will be going further. It’s not going to be easy, and the cost is going to be steep but the return in the long run will be worth it – Im currently working on making immersive music venues the standard for touring music acts.

As a woman, I often find people are surprised how much technical know-how I have. As a technologist, I often find people are surprised how creative I am. As a touring tech, I always find people who have no idea that “I’m just here for the knowledge and experience”.

It can be frustrating at times, but when you get a group of people that has been collected over the last decade, magical things happen – and that’s going down right now.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
the entire week would revolve around kayaking during the day, whiskey weed and wine in the evening, and then creating until sunrise.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
So many people contributed to the success I have found so far, and they come from many aspects of life.

Artist Ash Sivils has been with me for 14 years, showing tangible work with me, curating shows together, and exploring the NFT space. She has always encouraged me to push myself, and is honest with her critique. She has found much more success than I have, but never fails to include me opportunities that she thinks I’ll be successful at!
