We had the good fortune of connecting with Katrina Murphy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Katrina, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Without a doubt, I will always be that energetic busy-bee type of a person. I am never one to sit and relax, I love to create and to explore. However, when I now hear words like “work life balance”, it has taken on a whole different meaning than when starting my business. Now a mother to four little ones (ages 8,5,3 and 1) my time is not only busy, but more valuable. It’s so cliche, but we literally blink and our littles ones are growing and changing. This has given me a different outlook on running things even more efficiently on the back-end of my business, and being more mindful of when I schedule sessions to not miss out on important family time. Being a mother though as also given more light to why I do what I do – I love creating raw authentic images for families because time to preserve all these memories that matter. I absolutely love what I do and am honored to utilize this passion.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My background is in fine arts and graphic design and received my BFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I focused on film photography and have a wild obsession with developing prints in the dark room and seeing the magic unfold. Due to all of these creative endeavors, I believe it pours out into my photography through my compositions, posing, and all the little details that make a photo come to life. Learning the business side and entrepreneurship definitely have thrown me for a roller-coaster, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world. It is so rewarding to accomplish and continue to grow a business that I am ever so passionate about.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Gosh, there is so much to do in San Diego from the beaches to the mountains – it is why I moved here from Wisconsin! However, some of my personal favorite places to hang out are in the stretch from Leucadia, Encinitas, to Cardiff, I just love the funky charm and beachy vibes. Fish 101 is one of my favorite spots to grab an oyster and a glass of wine, and Casa De Bandini is one of my favorites to grab a spicy margarita. Our family loves to take our e-bike to grab some frozen yogurt, hike Calavera Hills in our backyard, hit up the beach, and of course the San Diego Safari Park!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
One of THE most talented, generous, and creative people I have ever met….Cassie B. She is a singer whose voice is angelic and powerful and can hit notes like Mariah Carey….and also a dancer who can moonwalk across the stage with endless entertainment. She is in multiple bands, has a Taylor Swift show she is touring in San Diego and also the opening band for the San Diego Padres. This girl commits, creates and rocks!
