Meet Katie Carozza | Portrait and Event Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Katie Carozza and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Katie, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
As an outsider who has no photography experience, it’s impossible to understand the hours of work between a photoshoot and gallery delivery. Not only is editing a long (and fun) process, but it also can take hours to import, build, and export images. There are specific processes and rules that you have to know in order to deliver high-resolution images to clients. It goes a lot farther than snapping a few cute photos. I would never know what I do now without learning from other photographers and I’m sure in a few years I’ll look back and realize there are so many things I could be doing differently.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Photography has always been a part of my life. In middle school, I began using my parent’s camera to photograph super overdramatic portraits of my 5-year-old sister, my friends, and anything I could. They were so cringe but that’s part of the learning process lol.
I began taking pictures for a local boutique and by my freshman year of high school, I had my first senior pictures session. Now my grad seasons are packed and I spend the rest of the year shooting weddings, portraits, engagements, parties, and learning from amazing photographers.
Whether I’m photographing an event or portraits, I look for the details. I believe that small moments and items can tell a larger story. Many of the images are detail-oriented. Along with the images you expect from a wedding or grad session, I attempt to deliver a few tiny moments in every gallery. I love finding the silent beauty in every moment.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My San Diego itinerary has changed a lot in the past year! I used to give my friends a full SDSU tour, but now I’m a graduated “adult”, so I show people around PB. Tourmaline beach is my favorite ocean view and I really enjoy the restaurants along Garnet (my favorite might be Costa Brava or Cabo Cantina depending on the vibe).
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Charie Juaneza (www.chariephotography.com) and Gema Deleon who introduced me to Charie. I’ve loved photography since I was young but it wasn’t until studying under Charie Juaneza that I felt confident in my work. Charie constantly teaches me new techniques and gives me opportunities to grow my experience. I’m very thankful for her! She’s truly the best.
