Meet Kathryn Beamon | Owner, Science Guys of San Diego

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kathryn Beamon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kathryn, what should our readers know about your business?
Hi! I’m the owner of the Science Guys of San Diego! We offer fun, hands-on children’s science programs, including summer camps, parties, after-school clubs, in-school field trips, special event shows, science booths, and more! Our programs are the perfect mix of fun and education. We call it “edutainment!” We show kids that science is fun, cool, and easy! The most exciting part of our business is seeing how much fun the kids have during our programs!

How has your background shaped the person you are today?
I was born in North Carolina but moved to Guatemala at the age of seven. I lived in Guatemala for eleven years, and my passion for teaching children started in middle school. After high school, I moved to Tennessee and studied Early Childhood Education. Science courses were always my favorite, in both high school and college! I worked in the public school system in Tennessee for 11 years. I first met the Science Guys of Nashville in 2014 and began working part-time for them in 2016. In 2022, my husband and I moved to California and started the Science Guys of San Diego franchise!

Starting the business came with a little bit of a challenge because it also coincided with a move across the country! We left Nashville, TN on November 13, drove across the country for five days, and officially registered the business on November 18! We were lucky to be able to stay with a friend while we searched for housing. Needless to say, November and December 2022 were VERY busy months!

I am first and foremost an Educator! Once a teacher, always a teacher! I spent 11 years working in public education in Tennessee, first as an elementary school teacher, and later as a Family Engagement Specialist. I am proud to be a small business owner! I never dreamed I would own my own business – I thought I would always work in public education. Teaching is my passion, and I now I get to teach my favorite subject, Science, every day!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We have only lived in San Diego for 5 months, so we’re still exploring the city ourselves! Some of our favorite spots so far are Coronado Island, La Jolla, and Old Town. We also love Imperial Beach, which is where we live! We’ve enjoyed this small, quiet beach town, and love riding our bikes down to the ocean!

My husband and I are also dancers, so of course we would take our company out dancing! Some of our favorite salsa dancing spots are Queen Bee’s, Dance Headquarters, and Tango del Rey! I also teach Casino Rueda and Hip Hop Line Dancing in Imperial Beach!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The Science Guys of San Diego is a franchise of the parent company, Mr. Bond’s Science Guys, located in Nashville, TN. Before branching out on my own, I learned everything from Mr. Bond and his team. Mr. Bond’s children, Covalent Bond and Ionic Bond, were extremely helpful in making sure we had all the tools needed to start our own franchise!
