We had the good fortune of connecting with Kat Dion and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kat, what matters most to you?
I think the value that matters the most to me is curiosity. It’s so important, especially as a songwriter to be curious about the world that surrounds us. It’s easy to just get comfortable inside of our little bubble but there’s so much inspiration out there. It keeps us young at heart. So many things to learn, I feel like it has also benefited me in my journey of growth. Curiosity helps me want to get better.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I mostly get inspired by nostalgia. Especially the 80’s era. It does something to me, I don’t know. I also listen to a lot of 80s new wave, post-punk. I try to bring a modern touch to my influences with my music. So my music is like a hybrid between modern pop/rock and the 80’s sound. For now my proudest achievement is my debut EP Movie Star. The EP took 3 months to make, from my room during the first lockdown of the pandemic. Just getting up in the morning was hard, so the fact that I managed making this album with the help of Lunair, in 3 months was a big accomplishment for me. I am currently working on another album, I’m pretty excited about that. I really got where I am today with a lot of perseverance, trial and errors and a lot of luck. I just focused on why I do what I do, which is that I simply can’t help it. It’s not easy and still isn’t but I love it. I usually overcome the challenges by focusing on having fun. The moment this will not be fun anymore, there’s no point in me doing it. I have learned that you should never rely on anyone but it is okay to ask for help. Stay true to yourself and speak up. My favourite songwriter is Martin Gore, without his music and Depeche Mode, I honestly don’t know if i would have gotten into music.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to give a shoutout to my amazing supportive parents. Always being there for me, being my biggest fans. They taught me to dream big, to go after what I want and thank god they believed in me when I couldn’t. Also, to everyone that has helped me on my journey. My friends too.
