We had the good fortune of connecting with Karen Vargas Letkemann and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Karen, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I came across the idea for my photography business after realizing I could create a life where my job didn’t have to be in a separate box from my passions and likes. For many, starting a photography business can be a sort of “testing the waters first” and when you’re finally making enough to replace your current job, putting in your 2 weeks’ notice. For me, it was the other way around in a way. I was stuck in a job that gave me no sense of purpose, while occasionally shooting here and there. Although setting up this business didn’t, in any way, guarantee a decent income- much less match what I was currently earning I decided to take that huge leap of faith.During covid. While pregnant. Happy to say my passion for photography and hard work paid off. I love what I have created so far.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a true romantic and I take that with me to every session. My craft is intentional, delicate, fun and bright-spirited, while also tuned into the romance. I am dedicated to what I do 100% in ways that truly set me apart and make me the right fit for my couples. In a professional field such as photography, where everyone needs to find their footing to stand out, finding that voice, that client you just connect with, and finding your why is key. Getting to that point was a rollercoaster of a process for me. I’m proud of the journey this has become and where it has taken me over the years, because it has brought me the most loving, considerate, and appreciative clients ever.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them to Mango Haus in Bakersfield, Yosemite National Park, Three Rivers and enjoy craft beer next to Three Rivers Yogurt . We would visit Dutch Bros, Target and Staffords to enjoy some sweets. We would also go to the Lindsay farmers market on Friday night.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to shoutout my amazing husband and second shooter. He has been there every single step of the way. From registering my business to bouncing around creative ideas with me, and supporting me 100%.
