We had the good fortune of connecting with Justine Reichman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Justine, what’s one piece of conventional advice that you disagree with?
If you build it, they will buy it.

It takes a lot more work than that. Be prepared to spend triple the time you expected in the early stages- and at least double the money. It will be the best time and money you ever spent, however, because you’ll grow more as a person and a leader in this role than in any other you’ve ever had.

What should our readers know about your business?
I am most proud that we offer a platform for people to amplify their voice. We’re not here to shame or judge, but, rather, to provide people with the community and resources they need to make more informed choices about their business and food choices. It wasn’t easy to get to where I am business-wise. Becoming a successful entrepreneur came after many years, as a result of marrying skills I’ve honed over time, after failing at things I tried, after being the CEO/owner of a company I wasn’t passionate about, and after throwing many, many legit biz ideas at the wall and seeing that most didn’t stick for a multitude of reasons. The community I’ve created gives entrepreneurs at all stages in the better-for-you food industry a place to talk about their goals, work through their ideas, share their fears, and get advice from peers that have been where they want to go. Mentorship and counsel is crucial and increasingly hard to find. Respect is served in every interaction and it makes my goal of increased awareness and availability of better-for-you food across the world increasingly attainable.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The Marshall, for oysters, Healdsburg Wineries for wine tasting (specifically DaVero Farms and Winery), Carneros Resort and Spa for a staycation (dog friendly and with an edible garden!).
I also can’t forget AVERY, and Burmatown, which just opened a second location within walking distance of my house!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My success in life, is a large credit to my experiences, but more-so the people around me. A few of the people who have really impacted my values, and in large part of what we’re doing here, are Lisa Johnson, Meghan Smith, Barbara Anderson, and my mother, Susan.

As part of growing NextGen Purpose, it’s imperative to include people in the industry, like Lisa Johnson, an expert in food loss and waste. A dynamic force in the industry, I’m grateful to have her in my life as both a professional role model and friend.

Sometimes in life we’re lucky to have people that aren’t just colleagues, but friends, someone who inspires you professionally and on a personal level, and that person is Meghan Smith. She has over 20 years of experience in bringing people’s stories to life in print and on screen. She showed me how to take what I was doing and develop a podcast that could go to air, and would enable people to share their stories. I could have never imagined doing this without her. Her expertise and her vision and her ability to see the story and create content, alongside her leadership and friendship, is something I’m grateful for and has been imperative to building my success.

Barbara Anderson, a longtime friend, mentor and chosen family member, who has inspired me for years.

“You can’t be an expert at everything. Surround yourself with people who excel at the things you don’t.”

My mom, Susan, taught me that at a young age, and it’s something I’ve taken with me through all my personal and professional endeavors. She taught me to try everything, but realize who you need to surround yourself with to be successful. Watch them, learn from them, and work alongside them-together you’ll have the skill set you need to succeed.

My father, David, a tireless entrepreneur and a tireless mentor. His support of a new generation of entrepreneurs and leaders is inspiring, and has driven me to do my best in supporting those who are up and coming.
