We had the good fortune of connecting with Julie Seal-Gaustad and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Julie, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I’ve actually started two businesses! The first time was in 2009 when an opportunity presented itself and realizing I wanted to have more control of my career. I founded Mirus Promotions, a marketing agency focused on helping companies promote their products and services and build their brands through face-to-face experiences. A dozen years later, the opportunity to sell the company presented itself and I took it—entering into an exploratory period of soul-searching to decide what was next for me.

My ActionCOACH business coach suggested I consider becoming a coach myself—and I realized there couldn’t be a better fit. The thing I always loved most at Mirus was growing leaders and consulting with clients to help them build their businesses. Starting my coaching business a few years ago made total sense because it allows me to help guide people to the next level of success—which I absolutely love to do—and have a solid work-life harmony, which was not the case when I started Mirus but is important to me now at this stage in my life and as a wife and mom. I’m doing what I love and living a lifestyle structured to meet my unique needs—what could be better?

What should our readers know about your business?
I actually started my professional life as a teacher some 25+ years ago! I feel like, all these years later, I’ve really come full circle as a business coach. Even during the 12 years I ran my agency I was very involved in coaching my team, providing them with the training and leadership development they needed to be their very best. In my current role, which I’ve held for about three years, I help people achieve what they want in business and life, pushing them further than they would normally stop on their own. I know the value of that firsthand!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
So this answer would definitely depend on if my best friends were coming with or without their kiddos! Also, living the majority of my life in San Diego, the list could get long…so I’ll share those that truly stand out as I answer this question.

One of my favorite places to hang out in the San Diego area is Coronado—the sandy beach, the Hotel del Coronado, the restaurants, riding bikes, the planes flying over the beach, the softest sand… It never gets old!

I also enjoy going back to South Park, where I lived for seven years, checking out the restaurants, coffee shops and stores—and always stopping in at Rose Wine Bar, my old haunt. Another must-have is Piacere Mio, where you’ll always be greeted with a smile and they make you feel like family. Plus, the Italian food is AMAZing.

A couple of my favorite breweries are Mike Hess Brewing in North Park and Societe, where it’s kid-friendly and they brew my all-time favorite IPA, “The Pupil.”

We live in Temecula now, but whenever I visit San Diego or meet up with family and friends, these are always the spots I recommend we meet and enjoy.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I love this Shoutout series! I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to a person and an organization—my coach, Karie Kaufmann and ActionCOACH, the company we both represent. Karie instilled the value of coaching in me, offering guidance and plenty of tough love while I was building my first business, and even now she continues to be a wonderful support person and resource for me. As for ActionCOACH, this community provides me with a wealth of resources, seasoned colleagues, systems and frameworks to help me better serve my clients. I built my first business to work without me through ActionCOACH and am proud to pay it forward and help others to own a business, not a job.
