We had the good fortune of connecting with John-Robert and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi John-Robert, why did you pursue a creative career?
It brings me joy! I have a couple of vices and shallow pleasures, but making music is a labor of love. It’s fulfilling work! I wake up excited for what I’ll finish/work on that day. I’d make music for free because I love it. Getting paid to play, and create is just a bonus.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I dropped a song called “WAISTBIN.” It’s been my favorite released tune of mine thus far. I’m excited about working my way up to being more self sufficient with the tracking and production side of the music making process. Total creative control is my goal.

Consistently making music, and a great deal of luck is how I got to where I am today. Music isn’t like chopping wood. The more hours you put into chopping wood, the more lumber you leave with. Sometimes, the longer I spend working on a song, without a break, the worse the song sounds. It’s important to listen to what I’m working on with fresh ears, and to give myself the right amount of space from a tune as I’m working on it. I enjoy juggling 2-4 songs at a time. I get to constantly refine songs, without falling down any rabbit holes.

Moving to LA, and making music full time felt too far fetched to me when I was in my parents’ basement in Virginia. I thought I had to be “realistic”. While it’s important to be realistic, it’s also important to let myself have pie in the sky aspirations. It’s been cool giving myself permission to daydream.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My parents deserve a good shout! My father would take me to any place that would allow me to play. Whether it was singing the national anthem for MMA fights, or playing an old folks home. I have two phrases of his hardwired into my brain. He would always say “The worst they can say is no,” which is why he’d ask anyone under the sun if I could play for them. The second phrase being “This could all end tomorrow” which in his way meant, enjoy the journey. Be grateful for every experience this music thing has to offer, because the world never owes me a career in music.
