We had the good fortune of connecting with Joaquin Perez Nogueiras and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joaquin, what’s your definition for success?
Success to me is a point in which you internally recognize that you have achieved a goal you were seeking. To me, the ultimate success would be creating a film that my peers and I consider to be a masterpiece. That’s not to say that a goal is all one should want or expect out of their lives. I find that working towards that very goal and pushing much further than I thought I’d be able to handle is a personal success as well. Essentially, success is a goal comprised of much smaller successes all working in unison to produce something you’re truly proud of.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The most basic answer: I’m not special. But that’s what I think my angle is. I love to tell stories that have familiar faces and voices to them. People that, outside of the context of the story, really aren’t very special. I grew up listening to almost unbelievable stories about my family back in Argentina. My mom and dad could paint the harshest and most tragic worlds revolving these stories yet they were heartwarming and hilarious. Looking back at them, their stories seem almost absurdist and fantastical but are nothing more than simple little memories – something that I’ve come to try and breathe into my own projects. I’m most excited to reveal the final version of “The Fishing Trip”, which is a reimagining of a story about my dad, his brother, and his cousin going on a simple little fishing trip. The story is one I’ve heard since I was a kid and this film is intended as an ode to him. A thank you for inspiring another storyteller. From here, I’ll be working together with my Producer and writing partner, Greg Pricoli to pump out as many projects as we possibly can. I’m only just starting out making bigger productions, but if I’ve learned anything from the business so far it’s that you’ve got to hit the ground running and never stop. Make your mark because no one will make it for you.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them to Stout Burger. I was raised in the South but I gotta give the GOAT burger award to Stout Burgers and Beer. I don’t wanna blow up the spot on some smaller places but I’m pretty sure this place can handle such a small shoutout. El Matador is also one of the nicest beaches I’ve ever been to. As for fun, I would either take someone to the New Beverly for a movie or to Lei Aloha for some of the coolest people I’ve ever had the honor of drinking around.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
In all honesty, there are two people that I would like to shoutout. Firstly would be Anthony Angelone AKA Tension Head (@tensionheadinc0, who is the composer on my most recent project, “The Fishing Trip”. I would also like to give a huge shoutout to Simon Moore (@simonmooredp), the Director of Photography on that same project. Without Simon’s professionalism and experience, I wouldn’t have been nearly as confident during Production and Anthony’s masterful ability with instruments just oozes personality into the score. Sorry if I was only meant to pick one but I just couldn’t. I owe a lot to these two. Couldn’t have done it without them.
