We had the good fortune of connecting with Jiri Tomanek and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jiri, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my own business was rooted in a desire to create something unique that reflected my personal artistic vision and values. I wanted to build a space where art, individuality, and client experience took center stage. Tattooing had always been about more than just the art itself—it’s about connection, self-expression, and trust. I felt that by having my own shop, I could cultivate an environment where these elements were fully integrated. Also, I wanted to have the freedom to experiment with new ideas, collaborate with other artists, and build a brand that went beyond just tattoos, incorporating merchandise and aesthetics that aligned with my vision. Ultimately, I wanted to leave a legacy and create a place where clients could feel like they’re part of something bigger.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is deeply rooted in storytelling and emotion, which I think is what sets me apart. I’ve always been fascinated by how tattoos can serve as both personal expressions and pieces of wearable art. My aesthetic blends elements of bold, striking designs with softer, more intricate details, often drawing from neon lights, 80s VHS, and synthwave themes. I love creating pieces that feel timeless yet nostalgic. What excites me the most is when clients tell me their tattoos resonate beyond just the design—when people recognize the brand and connect with its vibe. That’s the best feeling.

Getting to where I am today professionally wasn’t easy. Like any creative journey, it had its challenges. There were moments of doubt, long hours perfecting my craft, and learning how to run a business. But what kept me going was my passion for the art and the relationships I’ve built with my clients. Overcoming challenges meant being adaptable and staying committed, no matter how tough things got. I’ve learned that persistence, consistency, and a willingness to grow are crucial.

The biggest lesson for me has been understanding the importance of building a brand that reflects who you are. I want the world to know that my brand is more than just a tattoo shop—it’s a community, a movement that embraces individuality and connection. I’m incredibly proud of what I’ve built, and I’m excited to keep pushing boundaries, creating art that tells stories, and growing that sense of community both in my shop and across the world.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to give a huge shoutout to Reese Hillburn and her shop, The Edge Ink. Reese was the one who invited me to San Diego in the first place, and that experience really opened the door for me to explore tattooing in a whole new environment. It was a pivotal moment in my career, and I’ll always be grateful for the support and opportunities that came from that collaboration. Reese has been an incredible artist and friend, and The Edge Ink is a space that truly embodies the spirit of creativity and community. I wouldn’t be where I am today without that initial push, and it’s an honor to have worked with them.
