We had the good fortune of connecting with Ji Bowlus and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ji, Let’s talk about principles and values – what matters to you most?
At Take Care Space, our beliefs are as follows:

— Love starts from within and everyone is worthy.
— Size matters only when it comes to heart and spirit.
— Diversity, inclusivity and acceptance drives everything we do.
— Beauty is found in all shapes, colors, and sizes.
— Kindness, compassion, and empathy can change the world.
— Life is about taking care of ourselves, each other and our planet.
— Soul-care is community care.

Many of these beliefs and core values come from lessons I’ve personally had to learn through healing past traumas. And, it sure was not easy! The one that was the most difficult was the idea that “love starts from within and everyone is worthy.” I didn’t think that I was inherently worthy to be loved. I tried to be “lovable” by external factors like over-achieving and striving to be “perfect.” My traumas impacted how I viewed my self-worth and what I thought I needed to accomplish or look like to be loved. This led to years of self-harm including an eating disorder, substance abuse, and an extreme workaholic life-style. I was able to function at high levels…until I couldn’t anymore and I nearly died. It was then, 14 years ago, when my healing journey began. It was on this journey (that is an ever evolving and continuous path) that I learned and continue to learn how to love myself.

Take Care Space is a result of wanting to share healing journey experiences, create community, and support other women. The company will be going through a transformation later this year where community and shared experiences will be much more of a central focus. Supporting other small businesses and the artist community will continue to be one of our goals as well. Stay tuned and until then, be well and TAKE CARE!

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Take Care Space exists to support and celebrate healing journeys, soul-care, and creating personal and community spaces to take care. We create custom products, collaborate with women artists, and curate offerings from other like-minded small businesses.

My goal was to leverage the business lessons and experiences gained in nearly 20 years of advertising, marketing, and publishing to build a brand that could make space for people, their healing journeys, and create a community with shared values. I’m excited to have connected with so many people through our social platforms, in-person events, and by the support extended through purchases on our website and retail partner locations.

When I launched Take Care Space, never did I think that we would be recognized in publications like Real Simple nor be shipping to nearly two dozen countries around the world!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Growing up in Orange County, and still to this day, my favorite places involve the outdoors (especially the beaches). I would take them to some of my favorite – Laguna Beach, Newport Beach, Huntington Beach – and of course an evening bonfire at Bolsa Chica Beach. For good eats, I would share with them some of my favorite Korean restaurants from Irvine to Garden Grove.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d love to dedicate my shoutout to a loving chosen family and community including Dr. Christine Coleman, all the brave and kind souls in her Women of Color Thriving Group that I am a member of, and Miriam Stone of LifeStance Health.
