We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Cooper and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jessica, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
I’ve always disagreed with the statement that “Art comes naturally.” I think that natural talent is of course a factor, but personally I find that dedication and passion to the art makes the stark difference between amateur and professional. Having the “photographer’s eye” is not something that’s easy to teach, however. It’s one of those things that you learn after several photo sessions, and several less than ideal photos.

So, I find this statement a bit complex. It’s a combination of natural talent + experience and skill, but this ratio can vary from person to person! I’ve met some incredible photographers that have amazing talent having learned on their iPhones, and I’ve also met some incredible photographers that were able to invest right away and get the tools to aid their journey. There is no singular “mold” for what an artist, or photographer can be, and this is something that I truly love about this specific art form.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m no stranger to the fact that art very often mimics other artist’s work.

Especially in the field of photography, it can be easy to find another photographer who has captured a similar photo. Something that I try to do with my photography that is unique is framing or mirroring the subject with lighting that provides it with a little extra storyline. The quote “a picture says a thousand words” is a motto I try to carry with me when I’m shooting scenery or subjects. I can easily sit and admire a landscape for hours without becoming bored, but I realize that is not the case for everyone. My goal is to be able to share my admiration of landscapes and cityscapes with those who may need a little help seeing it for themselves!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’ve always been the kind of person to not create an itinerary! I’m a pretty avid traveler, but I also have my fair share of experience as a tour guide. I’ll usually bullet point a couple of favorite spots: La Jolla Coves, Torrey Pines, Mt. Soledad. From there, there’s a lot of opportunity for hiking, adventuring, shopping. I find that once you arrive somewhere, it can be easy to get distracted and stray away from the itinerary, which is why I try not to create one. I like to allow time for adventuring, and often times this is how I discover new places that not everyone has heard of.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I always dedicate to my family for being so supportive of my endeavors, and always hanging up my photos, or giving them as gifts!
