We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessa Bertolini and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jessa, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
It may sound silly, but for me I rely on pros and cons lists alot.

Does it bring you joy at least 75% of the time or do you often wonder if you deserve more/better? Let me save you some time, if you wonder if you deserve more/better, you do. Would you do it for free? If money is the only thing motivating you and you don’t find any joy in what you do, that is no way to live life. If your intuition is telling you to go for it, go for it! Even if you’re afraid. Feel the fear and do it anyway How tightly are you holding onto this? If you are white-knuckling it through life, you’re choking your dream. We should be able to hold our dream in open hands and be ok if we are given something better. If something better does come along and you pass it up because you’re stubborn about this specific dream, it won’t succeed. Always ask for “this or something better”.

When you are manifesting, praying, or hoping for income but you are hung up on that income coming from you working your *ss off, that is a very small window for the universe to give your blessing. Know it’s coming and be open to it.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a beauty consultant, I prioritize hair and scalp health, but my specialty is curly/wavy hair. Here’s how it works: I send someone my beauty intake form and use their answers to design a custom hair routine for them according to their budget. Then, I schedule a 10-15 minute free consultation where I review their concerns and questions from the form. I tell them my recommendation for a new hair routine and get them set up with their client portal. Once they receive their routine in the mail, we jump on another short 5 minute video call where I go over the steps and then I check in about once a week for progress photos and any reevaluations or new inquiries!

What sets me apart is the fact that I’m not here to compare products. If someone has come to me with questions, it’s because what they’re doing right now isn’t working and they see that what I do does work. My focus is on self care and self love. We deserve every bit of love that the universe wants to bring to us. Assuming we only live once, we should live this life to the fullest. Wear the luxury perfume, the designer shoes, and jewelry. Spoil yourself and have fun!

Where I am today professionally was from alot of pivoting and trial & error. Rebranding and diving into my own niche was key for me. I did alot of market research and studied my analytics and insights daily. I read about color and font psychology and learned relevant hashtags. I read the clinical study results for the products I use and even compared the ingredients list to several other big product lines on the market. I dug into both the FDA and European Union beauty guidelines and learned that the European Union bans over 2,000 chemicals from being used in products sold there, but the FDA only bans 11. That goes into your bloodstream in 26 seconds!

“Easy” is a funny word. It looks and feels different to everyone. I know that business and communications come easily to me, it’s just a matter of focusing in on what I want.

I learned quite a bit of lessons on the way and I’m still learning. Your warm market is the hardest market to reach and shouldn’t be your main focus. It’s good to introduce it to them, but don’t pressure it. They stick around because they like you without commercials. Find your niche and ICA (Ideal Customer Avatar) and go from there. Don’t jump ship because it’s too hard! If it feels hard, you’re holding on too tight. Trust. Remember, if you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room! If you feel like you’re out of your depth being in that room, find a mentor and learn as much as you can.

The world should know that I did not come from wealth. My father had drug and alcohol addictions when I was young and my parents were separated for a short time. My mom was a single mom for a while there. We sold candy bars, beef sticks, homemade flower crowns, and car wash tickets (we washed the cars). Mowed lawns, cleaned houses, babysat, you name it. My dad has now been sober for more than 20 years and is a general contractor. My mom is a beauty consultant too and she also owns and operates a small metaphysical shop online. He and my mom are married and happy. My personal brand is very much rooted in gratitude, manifestation and the “treat yo’self” mindset. That all pairs nicely with my own work ethic and love for what I do.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Disneyland and DCA is a MUST! Cruise down PCH. For local spots I’d say Crystal Cove, Top of the World, Inspiration Point, and Pacific City. Bars, restaurants, and hot spots; The Blue Beet, Tin Lizzie’s, the Cauldron, Oji sushi at the Triangle, Mastro’s, Napa Rose, The Resort at Pelican Hill, Seabirds Kitchen, The Donuttery, Vegan Pizza, Beauty and Essex (LA) and House of Blues Foundation Room, South Coast Plaza, Irvine Spectrum, The Lab Anti-Mall and The Camp.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shoutout to my mom and sponsor, Lisa Bertolini, for introducing this business to me. To Anni Komer, our upline, for always having or finding the answer when I ask a question. Thank you to my clients and business partners! I wouldn’t be in this place of abundance without you. Thank you for trusting me with your hair, it’s truly an honor. We Curlies don’t want anyone touching our hair, EVER, so it’s really a big deal to have someone trust me with their curls. To my family and friends for always wanting the best for me. The universe always brings me the thing I want or something better and I’m so grateful for all of the abundance and love in my life.
