We had the good fortune of connecting with Jeremy LaBahn and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jeremy, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I think there is some level of risk in most of our day to day decisions, but we don’t really stop to think about it. There is risk in getting in your car and driving somewhere, being a large public place, picking up food from a street vendor etc. All of these scenarios welcome some level of risk into our lives. When we think of starting a business, to most people that is the ultimate risk. When I’m evaluating the potential for risk in my life, whether it’s in regard to starting a new venture or getting on an airplane, I always think “What is the absolute worst thing that can happen?” If I can find peace with that outcome, then I will take the risk.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
In 2018, I purchased my first business, previously Stecklair Event Co, which had been established for 4 years. At that time, I had just graduated from college and was very interested in starting a business. I had spent the last 6 years working for the family company gaining experience in management and sales, while going to school. I was in a season of evaluating what I wanted for my life when the opportunity came up to purchase a business. I made the decision to go forward and within the first year of operating, we doubled revenue of the company’s previous highest year. In 2019, we purchased a second business, previously CC Vintage Rentals and we merged it with our existing business. During that time, we rebranded our company and formed Wonder Event Rentals and we offer specialty rentals for weddings, corporate events, and just about any type of party. This year in 2020, we started Wonder Moving Company and we now offer moving and relocation services for residential and commercial buildings. The last couple of years we have experienced a lot of growth and I have loved the whole experience. There have definitely been challenges, but I feel that I was created to do exactly what I’m doing.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Anytime we have friends or family from out of town, we always take them to either Coronado or the Harbor downtown. Walking along the water and enjoying the scenery is a must.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I grew up working for the family business and that’s where I gained most of my working experience. It was my first, worst and best job all in one. I was consistently challenged and pushed to grow during the whole time that I was apart of that company. There were definitely moments when I desperately wanted to leave, but I’m very grateful for my time there and I wouldn’t be where I am today if it was not for that opportunity. I think a lot of times it’s situations like this that we can take a lot of good away from.
