We had the good fortune of connecting with Jennifer Patterson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jennifer, what principle do you value most?

In my therapeutic practice, I’m deeply committed to social justice and serving the LGBTQIA+ communities. As a queer individual, I’ve created an affirming space for open exploration, free from judgment, acknowledging the unique stressors faced by the queer community. Prioritizing ongoing education, I deepen my understanding of their specific needs.

With a focus on diversity and intersectionality, I aim to build a safe and inclusive therapeutic environment, fostering trust and supporting people’s unique experience. As an anti-oppressive therapist, I empower others and contribute to broader systemic change within mental health by actively recognizing and addressing intersecting systems of oppression.

My commitment extends to the ongoing process of decolonizing ourselves and the field of mental health, challenging ingrained power dynamics and biases. I strive to create an inclusive, equitable, and empowering environment where clients feel heard, validated, and supported. Beyond individual therapy, I advocate for initiatives challenging oppressive structures in the mental health profession, contributing to a more just and equitable mental health landscape that prioritizes the well-being of all individuals, particularly those who have been historically marginalized.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

As a registered associate marriage and family therapist, my commitment to social justice and collaborative care sets me apart. My journey, fueled by compassion shaped through personal and global challenges, led me to a career aimed at positive change.

While the path hasn’t been easy, overcoming challenges has been integral to my growth. I’ve learned the importance of compassion for myself and others. A significant lesson along the way has been the transformative impact of Internal Family Systems (IFS), enhancing my ability to support clients effectively.

My brand and story reflect a dedication to inclusivity, justice, and collaborative therapy approaches. Inspired by personal experiences, I aspire to be a catalyst for change, genuinely aiming to alleviate the struggles of marginalized individuals and communities.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

Living in San Diego means showing my friend a week that’s a mix of cool, weird, and fun. First off, we’d get into the ghostly vibes with the Whaley House Ghost Tour in Old Town – a bit spooky, a bit historic, and a whole lot of interesting.

Then, we’d dive into the wild side at the San Diego Zoo.  After that, it’s a chill day at Balboa Park – museums if we feel like it, or just wandering around the green spaces. Of course, we’d throw in a day trip to Disneyland because I love the park!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Dr. Allison Brownlee, Herb Schnabel, Montse Chavarria, Bianca Lothridge, and Dr. Reihaneh Mahdavi.
