We had the good fortune of connecting with Jennifer Morilla and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jennifer, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risking anything whether in life or business, is a gamble. So you have to yourself [and measure] if you’re willing to risk the downfall. So with any risk, what’s the risk cost? What are you giving up? Is It worth It? For example, If you are starting a business and you’re measuring the risk; what will happen if It fails? Are you okay with that failure? Could you deal with It? If not, then don’t risk It, if It’s not a big deal BUT you know in your heart you won’t fail, then go for It.
Thats how I look at my risks. Is It work the failure? AND then I think, what is actually possible if It does work? – that’s where the magic happens!
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I started as a travel blogger back in 2015 and I wasn’t your regular travel blogger. I traveled with clean water filters to developing countries. I worked with social and sustainable brands. I got to travel the world and visit 44 countries. I did that for about 3.5 years. And then in late 2018, I began to be recognized as an authority in the marketing space. So I was asked to speak on stages and educate. Which then led to my first online course on how to create and sell a brand.
From there everything started. I re-launched my Youtube Channel in 2019 and began to create courses and group programs to mentor people on how to build online businesses. In 2020 I hit my first 6-figures and everything doubled after that.
Last year I hit half a million in revenue. It’s been a journey! And I’ve learned the hard way that It isn’t a race It’s a marathon. That slow and steady wins, and that simplicity is KEY!
I think It’s important to remember no matter how ‘big’ you get or how ‘successful’ you get that you have a WHY. That you stick that. You have an intention you’ll always keep going. I quit my job in 2015 because I wanted to change the world. I wanted to play my part.
In my early 20s, I lost my younger brother, and that really changed my life. I was 21 and looked at life really differently. It wasn’t the same anymore [for obvious reasons].
And while money and growth are cool! It isn’t everything. Build a business to create jobs and create the ‘ripple effect’ of what life is about. We are all here to serve and give. When you realize that and build a business/brand from that place, everything gets easier. The bottom line, is don’t just do It for the money.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am from NYC, Its the best city in the WORLD! haha
I mean It really depends on what they want. if they want to eat some yummy oysters I’d recommend the Mermaid Inn or my hidden secret The Grand Central Oyster Bar! I know you’re thinking ‘Ew It’s in GC’, but NO It’s good! Get some fries [they have skinny fries] and some Champaign and promise you’ll thank me!
If you want a fun night out I would suggest the West Village! If you’re looking for something a little more bougie then head over to Beauty & Essex. Also, the East Village is a great time too!
You really can’t go wrong in NYC, there is always something for everyone!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to thank myself! haha- kidding
So there are def a few things I can thank for my success. I’ve had so many mentors over the years! I couldn’t pick one except my parents for paving the entrepreneur’s blood in me. I come from a family of entrepreneurs and hustlers. As a Latina 2nd generation Cuban American. My parents built everything they had.
Overall I’ve been blessed in that I have surrounded myself with the right people that I have learned from.
