Meet Jenn Rehmann | Pet photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jenn Rehmann and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jenn, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
Our pets give us so much unconditional love, but sadly live very short lives, compared to ours. I provide tangible and lasting memories of pets and of our special bond with them. Dose of Doodle Photography is out in the world to remind people that they can document their fur-babies and keep those memories fresh. I also provide end-of-life (Legacy) photoshoots for senior pets, when owners get an inkling that their friend might not be here much longer, or for when a pet owner gets the bad news that the end is happening. I have joined the.Tilly Project, to be listed as a photographer who offers these end-of-life services.
It’s not only the sad times that I document, but I am here to provide things such as puppy photos, welcoming a new baby into the family photos, and normal “here’s a best day, or favorite outing” photos. Just as we are used to having professional photographers capture our human families over time, pet photographers can do the same, but with your fur-baby in the starring role.
I am also part of a larger effort to support organizations that are bringing help and awareness to abuse situations such as the Galgo dog rescue efforts in Spain, and rescue efforts of dogs from meat-markets in other parts of the world. I am happy to be part of a profession that celebrates and educates that pets are more than property, but that they have emotions and souls that should be cared for and cherished.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am a small-business owner and provide mostly on-location sessions and some studio sessions. I am still in the new-business stage and am concentrating on growing my reach. Challenges so far have been in learning the technical aspects of the equipment I need to use to be able to capture beautiful photos in just about any setting; such as learning how to use off-camera lighting and also the unique aspects of pet photography such as how to photograph fur, how to photograph a black dog, or a black dog sitting next to a white dog…how to get the pet to look at you, how to remove leashes in photoshop, and most importantly, which treats are universally valued!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite spot in my area is Old Towne Orange, also known as The Orange Circle. It is an historic old-town area, with many antique stores, coffee shops and many great restaurants. Right inside of the traffic circle is a small park with a fountain. I love to photograph there, and since I live nearby, I am often at the park with a latte, just relaxing. Some of my favorite restaurants there are Urth Caffe, Jaxsons chicken, Bruxies (unforgettable chicken in a waffle sandwiches) Pandor (great almond croissants and a killer turkey & Brie sandwich) and Zito’s Pizza. Great places for coffee are Sweet Art Cafe (great pastries), Black Dot Coffee and the Starbucks tucked into a little corner. The antique shops and clothing boutiques are fun to peruse, and there is a charming plant store, The Potting shed, that is a little gem.
I could spend a week just in Old Towne Orange, but if I had out of state, or out of the country friends visiting, I would also take them to Laguna Beach- for the beauty and art studios, Huntington Beach for the vibe, Ollie Bollie donuts in Tustin and the Mission Inn in Riverside (for the photography possibilities!)

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d love to give a big shoutout to my husband, Kevin, who has supported me in my growth and learning as a photographer and has only offered encouragement to me as I grow as a photographer and as a business. Being able to continue my learning opportunities and equipment purchases without pressure for when I will show a tangible return for investments has been priceless to me.
My next shoutout would have to be to Nicole Begley of Hair of the Dog Academy, which is a learning community I have turned to for education, growth and encouragement. It was through this community that I realized that focusing only on pet photography was something I could do, and was really a “thing” that existed. In fact, I’ve just returned from an amazing five-day pet photography workshop in Spain, Hosted by Hair of the dog; where I learned so much.
